Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)

  • Federal and STATE Requirements

A parent of a child with a disability has the right to obtain an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) at public expense if the parent disagrees with an evaluation conducted by the LEA (34 CFR 300.502(b)(1)). Public expense means that the LEA either pays for the full cost of the evaluation or ensures that the evaluation is otherwise provided at no cost to the parent, consistent with the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regarding the use of IDEA Part B formula amounts in general.

Katy ISD Independent Educational Evaluations – Request Process

Step 1: Review the Katy ISD documents for requesting an IEE linked below. For requests to be approved they must be compliant with the documents linked below.

Step 2: Click on the link below to access the Katy ISD IEE Request Form (note a separate form must be completed for each request. If two requests are included on one form, the first request listed is the request that will be considered.)

(All requests for IEEs must go through the above request process. If you need assistance completing the IEE request process, please contact the Katy ISD Special Education Department at 281-396-2630 and someone will assist you.)

    Next Steps

Once your request has been received, an email will be sent with information containing next steps. Please save this email for your reference. Katy ISD processes requests for IEEs on a daily basis. However, depending on the individual circumstances related to each request, once all necessary documents have been received, it can take up to 10 school-days for requests to be approved or denied. Once a request for an IEE has been approved, additional information will be sent to the parent via email.

Ongoing questions can be addressed by calling the Department of Special Education at 281-396-2630 or via email to IEEs@katyisd.org.
