    Parent Webinar Q&A:

What is the deadline for course selection for students transitioning from elementary to middle school?

Generally speaking, course selection will be completed in mid-March.  Please be on the lookout for specific dates from your child's campus.  Deadlines can also be found in SchooLinks.

Once a course is selected, do they have the option to change their elective, and if so, what is the deadline for making changes?

Students can make changes in course planner until the plan is approved by a counselor.  After counselor approval, changes can be requested until the campus deadline.

What is a 3-year or 4-year plan, and why is it important?

A 3-year plan is for a junior high student planning for 6th, 7th and 8th grades.  A 4-year plan is planning for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades.  These are important because they offer a structured road map to help your child achieve their long-term academic goals.

    Can you define KAP?

KAP means Katy Advanced Placement. These are courses that prepare students to take Advanced Placement courses.  "Beginning in grade 6, Katy ISD offers KAP courses in language arts, social studies, science and mathematics. Additional options are available in languages other than English, beginning with level III. The KAP curricula for these courses are built on the core academic curriculum and are aligned with AP course descriptions generated by College Board”. More information can be found on the Katy ISD advanced Academics webpage: https://www.katyisd.org/Page/4407

Yes, all courses offered in Katy ISD are in SchooLinks.

Is there a specific course selection "how-to" for 5th graders going into 6th?

Yes. We will have multiple events to discuss course selection, choosing KAP, and 3&4 year planning.  Also there will be information coming from your campus in the form of parent nights, student guidance lessons led by the counselor, helpful resources that will be sent home, and the counselor will meet with your student to ensure they have made the appropriate selections.

If my student chose an endorsement does this mean we need to stick with the courses for that endorsement?

If a student chose an endorsement and wants to change, they may speak with their counselor about the change to see if they have time to change endorsements and still earn all the credits for the newly chosen endorsement.

Do we login using guardian login or student login to work in schooLinks?

Students must log in to EDIT schooLinks course planner, personalized plan and to take assessments, etc., parents log in to view, and to approve the personalized plan.

Pre-Athletics is a PE class in 6th grade that some campuses utilize to schedule a group of students who are interested in taking athletics in the 7th grade.  All campuses have a method of identifying students who are interested in athletics, so if your campus does not use pre-athletics, there is a system in place.

No, there is not a pre-athletics for 8th grade. In 8th grade the options are PE, Athletics, or Dance.

Start by asking your current child’s counselor and they can help direct you to the correct person.

How do we get our kid's Schoolinks acct setup?

All students have a SchooLinks account.  If they log into MyKaty cloud, they can find the tile by searching the word “schoolinks”.

I logged into MyKaty, but I do not see a tile. Is it MyKaty-HAC-School Links?  I only see A+, Canvas Info, State Assessment Results.
