    Meet the Environmental Department

The Environmental Department consists of a group of certified, experienced professionals in a variety of trades who are committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for Katy ISD’s students, faculty, and staff. The trades and programs under the purview of the Environmental Department include Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Indoor Air/Environmental Quality (IAQ/IEQ), roofing and water-proofing of buildings, and water quality. The department also oversees the District’s adherence to State and Federal mandates such as the Texas Hazard Communication Act and the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).

    Pest Control Notification

Notice of pest control treatments will be posted in the campus front office 48 hours in advance of the scheduled visit. Student and employee handbooks provide general information regarding pesticide treatments. Parents, guardians and staff members can obtain detailed information regarding pesticide treatments, or can be notified in advance of treatments, by making a request through the IPM coordinator in the Maintenance and Operations Department.

For more information about our Integrated Pest Management Program see the link to “Pest Management” in the top navigation bar.

    Texas Hazard Communication Act

The Texas Hazardous Communication Act requires public employers to develop a written training program for their employees to inform them of the hazardous chemicals that may be in the workplace. Employees are trained annually and a copy of the written training program is located in the Environmental office.

    Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act

School districts must comply with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) which was signed into law on October 22, 1986. It established the framework for a regulation which requires that elementary and secondary schools identify asbestos-containing materials in schools, institute programs aimed at minimizing the risk of exposure and re-inspect those materials at least every three years. Katy ISD performs periodic surveillance of any asbestos-containing material twice a year, and maintains the three-year re-inspections as required.
