2022-2023 Grant Recipients from Katy ISD Education Foundation

The KATY ISD Education Foundation grant program enhances and extends the educational experience in the classroom, promotes advancement of skills or knowledge, and adds depth to existing educational programming. Awards given are based on how well a grant project includes innovative practices that incorporate the Katy ISD Instructional Cornerstones. The primary criterion for dispersing grants is high-quality educational content, in addition to considering the impact on students and/or educational community. Thank you to our educators involved who put forth the extra time and effort in their proposals!

The Future of Gardening: Inspiring the Next Generation to Grow: $4,849

Kathryn Black, Jonathan Christman, Julie Berardi, Terri Torres, Jennifer Simpson, Wellyna Olivier

Grades K-5 will build "Gardens of the Future" using Hydroponic Tower Gardens. This new age technology of gardening uses aeroponic technology - which studies have shown to triple the speed of plant growth, thus increasing yields while only using 10% of the water and space compared to soil gardening. LED lights allow for growth of indoor gardens all school year long, which means our dragons can grow sustainable crops without having to leave their learning environment. A wonderful bonus of this project- our campus will donate half of the food grown to local soup kitchens or food drives!

Cracking the Code: Decoding Reading: $4,949

Kathryn Smith, Hope Huddleston, Faith Day, Ashleigh Pepper

Thanks to this grant, our primary classrooms will be receiving high quality decodable book sets! Our K-2 students focus is on learning the code for reading using phonics. To reinforce their learning, they will now have grade level appropriate decodable texts to practice the application of decoding skills. These book sets will support our young readers in combining their phonics skills with their problem solving skills to become stronger readers.

What Cha Code, Mr. Roboto: $4,699

Ashley Trevino, Brandy Hernandez, Danyel Barnett, Amanda Alston, Amy Wolfe, Yvette Campassi, Wellyna Olivier

This grant will provide the opportunity to purchase the materials necessary to introduce robotics at an elementary level, and potentially even establish a robotics club here at KDE! Implementing a robotics program will give our dragons more exposure to the world of design, technology, and engineering. The students will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers, share ideas with staff, investigate problems, then design and implement a plan to solve them.
