About Schmalz Elementary​

School History:
Schmalz Elementary opened in August, 2001. The school was named in honor of veteran Katy ISD educators Jean and Betty Schmalz. Mr. Schmalz taught art at Katy Jr. High and Katy High School, while Mrs. Schmalz served Katy High for 39 years, first as an English teacher and later as librarian.

One of the first two elementary schools to be built using a newly developed design, Schmalz was built to house approximately 1300 students. The school has 48 regular classrooms arranged in grade-level pods around a central library/media center. Each pod has a teacher work and planning area with storage space. The floor plan also includes two art classrooms, two music classrooms, two computer labs, and a parent/volunteer workroom. Schmalz is also home to one of Katy ISD's seven elementary bilingual programs.

School Activities:
Schmalz Elementary provides a variety of opportunities for parents and the community to get involved in their children's education such as: Nifty Fifty's Night, Family Math Night, Breakfast with Santa, Family Reading Night, Science Night, Art Night, and PTA Meetings complete with student performances.

Student Programs:
Schmalz offers a variety of programs for students including Academic Support for Reading and Math, TItle1, Junior Achievement, Chess Club, Challenge, and Guitar Ensemble.

Schmalz Elementary​ Mission Statement:
Schmalz Elementary School will work collaboratively with parents and community to provide a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment in which parents are involved, students are challenged and teachers are dedicated to the belief that every child will learn. The implementation of an aligned comprehensive curriculum, partnered with a sincere commitment, will offer each child academic preparation and the opportunity to become productive and continuous learners, effective communicators, good citizens, and valued leaders of the future.
