Martha Raines
-
Martha Raines was a Katy ISD teacher of mathematics who devoted her life to reaching students of all backgrounds and instilling in them a desire both to learn and give back to their community.
Martha was a loving, caring individual to her students as well as her colleagues. She was always available - to assist with schoolwork or to offer professional or personal advice. As the long-time mathematics department chair at Mayde Creek High School, Martha cared for and ensured the success and wellbeing of each teacher in her department. She welcomed us all into her home to enhance a collegial atmosphere, yet with a firm, but gentle hand Martha was able to keep her department "toeing the line".
Martha created the Ram Seniors Volunteering Proudly (RSVP) program at Mayde Creek High School. The success of this program inspired other high schools in the district to put similar programs in place. Martha was a life-long volunteer herself. She volunteered at school, at her church, at local hospitals, and elsewhere throughout the community.
Martha was a top-notch educator right up until an insidious brain tumor forced her to leave the classroom. Martha's friends, family, colleagues, and students raised funds and set up a scholarship bearing her name to be awarded to seniors who demonstrated Martha's most valued traits- academic prowess and volunteerism.
Raines Academy is proud to carry on Martha's legacy of academic excellence and community involvement.
