Katy ISD Trustees Greenlight Additional Spring Holiday— Contingent on Bad Weather Days
KATY, TX [March 31, 2025] – In a move aimed at giving staff some extra time off, at this month’s Board meeting, Katy ISD’s Trustees approved amendments to the instructional calendars for the 2024-2025, 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years. The update grants staff an additional spring holiday in April, contingent on the district not exceeding two bad weather days.
“Katy ISD is meticulous in complying with the requirement for operational minutes to ensure that students have the instructional time they need to thrive,” said Sherri Ashorn, Director of Student Affairs in Katy ISD. “Because of this fastidiousness, and if the weather cooperates, the District can now offer staff an extra spring holiday.”
Katy ISD’s Board policy mandates a minimum of 75,600 operational minutes each school year. With this in mind, the existing Board-approved calendars have already built in enough minutes to account for the possibility of two bad weather days. The newly approved amendments pave the way for a bonus spring holiday, typically falling around Easter weekend, for staff — provided the district stays within the two bad weather day limit.
This change adds flexibility and a bit of springtime relief for Katy ISD staff, while ensuring that instructional time remains on track.
