A First in Katy ISD: Sundown Elementary Debuts Robotics Club for Elementary Students
KATY, TX [February 18, 2025] – Launching for the first time in elementary grades in Katy ISD, Sundown Elementary premiered a robotics club for its students this year. With curriculum designed specifically for young learners, the pioneering robotics students are part of the FIRST LEGO League, which has STEM activities for students in grades as young as prekindergarten.
The club is led by Sundown teacher Katie Kruszka and currently has 16 students in grades 4 and 5. Kruszka hopes to add even more young engineers next year and expand to include grades 2 and 3.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our students here at Sundown because it allows them to use their creativity and ingenuity in STEM,” said Dr. Kari Torres, principal of Sundown Elementary. “These students can use the skills they’re learning now to pursue a career in robotics and engineering, all thanks to the club.”
All Katy ISD high schools have world-class robotics teams that compete annually at state and world championships. Sundown’s students will be ready to join their high school teams armed with advanced knowledge of robotics and STEM through early exposure and hands-on learning.
FIRST LEGO League, part of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) nonprofit, was created just for elementary and junior high school students and provides them with the space to learn coding and robot-building skills using LEGO® materials.
