Katy ISD Student-Athletes Strengthen Leadership Skills Through Community Service Projects
KATY, TX [November 25, 2025] – Katy ISD student-athletes put their leadership into action this fall as members of the Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) partnered with two major community organizations to support events that benefit families across Katy and the Greater Houston area.
During the District’s Fall Breakout outreach projects, SALT students worked alongside the Katy Area YMCA and the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association (GHFCA) Bayou Bowl to assemble race packets for the annual Turkey Dash and player packets for the Bayou Bowl All-Star Game. Their work highlighted the teamwork, character and commitment to service that define the SALT program.
SALT is a District initiative that helps student-athletes grow as leaders through character, education, collaboration and community involvement. The program reinforces the belief that strong leadership extends far beyond competition.
“SALT gives our student-athletes the opportunity to lead with integrity and make an impact where it matters most,” Katy ISD Assistant Athletic Director Angela Spurlock said. “When students serve their community, they learn what it truly means to represent their campuses with pride and purpose.”
The Bayou Bowl raises scholarship funds for male and female athletes throughout the region, with award amounts ranging from $1,500 to $2,500.
The Katy Area YMCA Turkey Dash supports the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, which provides scholarships that help families access essential programs such as childcare, summer camps and swim lessons.
Through these service projects, SALT students demonstrated responsibility, cooperation and a commitment to giving back, strengthening the leadership skills they will take with them on and off the field.
