Katy ISD Game Changers: Isaac Coughran Leads Katy Football in Trenches and Classrooms
KATY, TX [November 20, 2025] – Basketball was his first love, a family tradition passed down from his grandfather who played in the NBA. The sport defined his early years. But when Isaac Coughran moved from California to Katy as an eighth grader, a new passion ignited – football.
The 6-foot-3 junior offensive tackle had never played organized football before arriving in what many consider the football capital of Texas. Yet his size, discipline and relentless work ethic quickly transformed him from a basketball standout into one of the region’s top linemen, now drawing attention from Division I college programs.
This season, Coughran was voted team captain by his Katy High School peers, a distinction Head Coach Gary Joseph says reflects both respect and trust. The now three-year letterman was asked to switch from defensive end to offensive line to fill a critical team need, a challenge he embraced without hesitation.
“When the coaches announced I was a team captain, I was very excited,” Coughran said. “Switching positions meant I had to build new relationships and step up as a leader. I wanted to set the tone for the O-line.”
Coughran’s adaptability and determination impressed coaches and teammates alike. His shift from rushing the quarterback to run blocking for one of the state’s top rushing attacks became a defining moment of leadership and character.
“It helps our program, because he’s a kid who shows you can be more than just a football player,” Joseph said. “He’s a student athlete, he’s involved in other activities, and he gives 100 percent in everything he does.”
When he’s not on the field, Coughran shines in the classroom and community. He’s a member of National Honor Society (NHS), choir and Peer Assistance Leadership (PALS). Coughran also makes time to volunteer regularly at his local church.
“He’s one of those kids people gravitate to,” Joseph said. “You’ll see him out working alone, and before long he’ll get others join him. That kind of leadership makes everyone better.”
Coughran credits his coaches and his faith for keeping him grounded and driven, crediting his coaches for encouraging him to pursue all of his interests, including choir, when he once considered stepping away. Coaches stressed the balance that pursuits like choir bring to an athlete’s life.
“They coach with passion and hold us accountable,” Coughran said. “They’re not just teaching football. They’re teaching life lessons that will help us succeed long after we leave Katy.”
His parents also instilled a deep sense of faith that continues to guide him.
“What I’ve learned most from them is to stay grounded in my faith and remember that everything I do is for God,” Coughran said.
He still has another year to play for coach Joseph and the Tigers, but his name could soon join the wall inside the Katy Field House, honoring athletes who advanced to collegiate and professional careers. Still, his goals reach beyond athletic success.
“I want my legacy to be that hard work pays off,” Coughran said. “Everything you do should be 100 percent. I also want to leave a legacy of integrity – a legacy of doing everything I say that that I am going to do.”
Isaac Coughran leads by example on the field, in the classroom and through volunteering.
