Introduction

The Katy community continues to be recognized as one of the fastest growing residential communities in the nation. Families continue to choose Katy ISD as a quality school district for their children, in a large part due to the excellent quality of facilities and learning environments.

The Facilities, Planning, and Construction Department is comprised of 13 highly dedicated and skilled staff members, including four office support personnel, who each embody the vision and mission for the department; the focus of which is the creation of outstanding teaching and learning environments for our students and staff.

Vision

With professionalism, the Facilities, Planning, and Construction Department will strive to provide functional, safe, efficient, cost-promoting facilities in a timely, well-planned manner that promotes a learning and working environment conducive to academic excellence. We will obtain the respect of our colleagues and the community through superior customer service, effective communication and quality workmanship.

Scope of Responsibilities

The Facilities and Planning Department is responsible for Long Range Facilities Planning involving all major capital aspects of facility needs within the District. This includes the construction of bond program projects on time and within approved budgets. Over the past decade, due to the rapid growth, approximately on average $100 million of construction projects have been completed annually. Projects completed serve a wide range of student needs, from academic to athletic, fine arts and career and technology to name a few. Projects also include site and field facility improvements.

We are building not only a school district, but a community within Katy as the population continues to grow, and in this regard, the Facilities and Planning Department, through a network of community outreach and involvement (i.e. Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council, YMCA, area developers, County Mobility Committees, Houston-Galveston Area Council, Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, Texas Department of Transportation, Grand Parkway Association, Energy Corridor District, Willow Fork Drainage District, Municipal Utility Districts) The strive to ensure a holistic well designed approach related to community and mobility planning and school site selection and development. The Facilities and Planning department staff work with demographic and real estate consultants in the identification and acquisition of school sites.

All aspects of property acquisition and sale are the responsibility of the Facilities and Planning Department, including specific requests related to easements, right-of-ways, etc. The Facilities and Planning Department is also responsible for property management related to the operation of the Education Support Complex.

All energy management control work for both new and existing facilities within the District is managed by Facilities and Planning staff. A large budget savings results through the accomplishment of the large majority of this control work by district staff.

Summary

As the District continues to grow for many more years to come, the Facilities, Planning, and Construction Department plans to work closely with Teaching and Learning departments, campus administration, and District support departments to ensure that the needs of our students and staff are met in a progressive manner, maintaining a high level of desirability and attraction for families in search of quality education and quality school facilities.
