Bio
Dr. Gwen Coffey began her career, as a teacher in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1996. In 1999, she began teaching at Golbow Elementary until 2005. At that time, she moved into a counselor position in Lamar CISD, where she eventually left to be the Lead Counselor at Bammel Middle School in Spring ISD. The next school year, she became an Assistant Principal at Bammel Middle, and she remained there until returning to Katy ISD in 2012 as an Assistant Principal at Cimarron Elementary. In 2015, she was named Principal at Rylander Elementary, and she held that title until moving into her new role, as Katy ISD’s Director for Compliance in 2018. Dr. Coffey holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, a second Master’s Degree from University of Houston-Victoria. Dr. Coffey received her Doctoral Degree from Texas Tech University.
Mission
The Special Education Department exists to provide leadership and service to equip campuses with knowledge and skills that lead to student success. The department believes in the power and importance of collaboration with campus staff, parents and students to provide a world class education for all our special education students in Katy ISD.
Vision
To be recognized as the Special Education Department that provides a level playing field for all the special education students in order to have access to the general education curriculum from a continuum of service delivery models in Katy ISD.
