Secondary Parent Checklists Due November 12Secondary Parent Checklists Due November 122021-10-04T14:00:54Z<div class="ExternalClass460B9F0E87CF44D0A057E9A5E1C6B4D5"><p>​<strong style="text-align:justify;">October 4, 2021 </strong><span style="text-align:justify;">– </span><span style="text-align:justify;">The State of Texas requires that various types of measures be used to identify students for gifted programs which include observations and standardized tests.</span><span style="text-align:justify;">  </span><span style="text-align:justify;">The secondary GT service model is a Specific Subject Matter Aptitude model.  Identified students in grades 6-12 are served in one or more of the four core content areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Advanced Placement (AP) and KAP curricula are differentiated to meet the unique needs of gifted learners.  AP/GT and KAP/GT courses are taught by teachers who have received training in the education of the gifted.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Beginning October 4, 2021, Katy ISD students in grades 6-11 can be referred for screening for the 2022-2023 gifted and talented program.  Parents must complete a parent observation checklist, which can be obtained from the student's school or from the <a href="/dept/GT/Pages/Secondary-GT-Service-Grades-6-12.aspx">Katy ISD website</a>.   KVA parents will receive an e-mail with a link to submit an online form. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">The deadline for completing and returning the parent checklist for students in grades 6-11 is <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>November 12, 2021</strong></span>.  Checklists that are not returned by the deadline will not be screened for service for the 2022-2023 school year.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Transfer students who were screened in Fall 2021 and not identified for GT services, must wait one full academic year before they can be rescreened. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Students who are currently receiving GT services and wish to be screened for services in additional areas must submit the <a href="/dept/GT/Documents/Request%20for%20Additional%20Service%2021-22%20-%20fillable.pdf">Request for Additional Services</a> on or before <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>November 12, 2021</strong></span>. </p><p>Parents may contact campus counselors or GT facilitators if they have additional questions.  Elementary and secondary parent checklists may be found on the <a href="http://www.katyisd.org/dept/GT/Pages/default.aspx">Katy ISD GT and Advanced Academics webpage</a>.​<br></p><p><br></p></div>

The GT program for elementary students in Katy ISD consists of a one-day pullout in the Challenge classroom with a teacher trained in gifted education.</div><div><br></div><div>Beginning in October, Katy ISD students in grades 1-4 can be referred for screening for the 2022-2023 gifted and talented program. Parents must complete a parent observation checklist, which can be obtained from the student’s school or from the Katy ISD website. To submit an online form, parents may contact the campus Challenge teacher. Katy ISD 5th Grade Gifted & Talented Screening DeadlineKaty ISD 5th Grade Gifted & Talented Screening Deadline2021-09-02T19:14:31Z<div class="ExternalClass8D54826A8B3B4480BD7F27D2A0848A84"><p> Gifted and Talented (GT) screenings for incoming secondary students will soon begin at Katy Independent School District.  Students currently in fifth grade who are not identified as part of the elementary Challenge Program have the opportunity to be screened for GT program services, at the secondary level.</p><p><br>If parents would like to refer their child for secondary GT screening they must complete a <a href="/dept/GT/Documents/Secondary%20Parent%20Checklist%20-%20(English).pdf">Secondary Parent Checklist</a> in English or <a href="/dept/GT/Documents/Secondary%20Parent%20Checklist%20-%20(Spanish).pdf">Spanish</a> and return it to their child's elementary campus by <strong>September 22, 2021</strong>.<br><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">“Gifted and talented education programs provide a variety of academic and social options for students who are advanced learners," said Katy ISD Director of Gifted, Talented and Advanced Academic Studies, Dr. Joan Otten.  <br><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Secondary gifted program options are available in English Language Arts & Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.  Students may be screened at their current campus in October and November in any or all of these content areas.  Parents will be notified of the placement decision by U.S. mail in January 2022.  Students who qualify for the GT program will begin the program in the fall of their sixth-grade year.  <br><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Contact the Challenge teacher at your child's elementary school if you have additional questions. </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Information was distributed to parents of KVA students via e-mail on August 26th. Parents of KVA students should fill out <a href="https://forms.gle/tBXiEMQVac7gxeE27">this form​</a> to have their child screened. Parents of face-to-face students should contact the Challenge Teacher on their campus directly. <br></p><p><br></p></div>
