Paraprofessional Requirements

 

Katy ISD has around 80 campuses with hundreds of paraprofessionals serving those students. All paraprofessionals are required to have some college hours, a high school diploma or a GED. 

Paraprofessionals serving special education students, that are not on a Title I campus, must also meet one of the below qualifications:

  • Have completed 15 semester hours of college coursework; or
  • Have met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
    • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics; or
    • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.

Paraprofessional positions serving any student at a Title I campus must also meet one of the below qualifications: ( Title I Campus List)

  • Have completed 48 semester hours of college coursework; or
  • Have obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or
  • Have met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
    • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics; or
    • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.

Project Para

Katy ISD utilizes the Project Para (For Special Education) to meet the rigorous assessment and training requirement for those applicants that don't have the above listed college hours' requirement for either the Special Education or Title I Paraprofessional. 

The cost is $15 and can be taken on your personal computer. It will take numerous hours to complete, but it does not have to taken all at once. You can pause and then return to the training and assessment at a later time. You will receive a certificate once you have completed and passed the course. You will need to upload that certificate to your application documents.

  3. Complete the account registration 
  4. Begin your training and assessment (This is a lengthy course and you do not have to complete it all at once.)
  5. Receive your certificate
  6. Attach your certificate to your application documents
