Commit to Get Fit!

Each year as the New Year rolls in millions of people make resolutions to improve their health by increasing their physical activity and improving their diet. Sadly, for most individuals the commitment and motivation to achieve their health and fitness goals doesn’t last. In fact, research shows that within 2 weeks of starting an exercise program for the New Year 25% of people drop out, with another 50% dropping out by month’s end. As a result, many of these would be exercisers fail to achieve the same fitness goals year after year. The main reason—social and personal barriers that prevent them form maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

With respect to social barriers school, work, family and friends can significantly influence an individual’s exercise level and eating habits. Without a supportive environment many people are destined to fail. However, the personal barriers people face when starting on the road to healthy living also have a significant impact. In North America where 66% of the population is under active, studies have found that some the most common reasons adults cite for not being more physically active include: lack of self-motivation, confidence, support, and self-management skills.

With that in mind, the following tips can help individuals overcome their own personal barriers as they move towards achieving their fitness goals.

Get clear about what you want regarding your health by setting realistic and achievable fitness goals. List all the barriers (i.e. work or lack of motivation) that you may face as you start on the road to healthy living:

  • Establish an action plan regarding your exercise and/or eating habits, including arrangements for what you will do when you encounter barriers
  • Develop a support system (i.e. a workout buddy, friends and family members) to help keep you motivated when you start to falter
  • Take steps to make regular physical activity and healthy balanced eating a part of your lifestyle starting today

Using the tips above will help you follow through on your New Year’s fitness resolutions, and put you on the path to making this the year you break the New Year, same fitness resolution cycle.
