D.A.R.E. Lessons
Grade 5: D.A.R.E. Core Curriculum
The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) core curriculum in Katy I.S.D. is delivered by specially trained uniform police officers to the fifth grade students and includes one lesson per week for 12 consecutive weeks. The D.A.R.E. Program helps students recognize and resist the pressures that may influence them to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, inhalants, and other drugs. Katy I.S.D. D.A.R.E. also utilizes the New D.A.R.E. curriculum which emphasizes positive decision making by using the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model.
D Define- Describe the problem, challenge or opportunity.
A Assess- What are your choices?
R Respond- Make a choice using the facts and info you have
gathered.
E Evaluate- Review your decision. Did you make a good choice?
The D.A.R.E. Program requires that a certified teacher be present and help
supplement classroom activities. A wide range of teaching techniques are used
including question and answer, group discussion, role play and workbook
exercises.
K-4 Visitations
D.A.R.E. officers visit fourth grade classes as well as students in grades K-3 as schedule allows. These visits focus on child safety and prevention issues. Students are also made aware of the potential dangers in abusing drugs, medicines and other substances.
