D.A.R.E. Camp 08

D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series
of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade
how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.
The program, which was developed jointly by the Los Angeles Police Department
and the Los Angeles Unified School District, initially focused on elementary
school children. It has now been expanded to include middle school and high
school students. The program in Katy ISD focuses on the elementary age student
in grades K-5
The program follows a carefully structured curriculum, focusing on topics such as positive decision making, resisting negative peer- pressure, drug use and misuse, building self-esteem, assertiveness training, media images on drug use, role models, and support systems.
In Katy ISD, separate components have been developed to introduce kindergarten through fifth grade students to the D.A.R.E. Program. D.A.R.E. also affords High School students an opportunity to serve as D.A.R.E. Role Models.
