The Operations Department is currently responsible for the daily cleaning of more than 9,000,000 square feet of District facilities. Our evening shift custodians each clean an average of 27,750 square feet in an eight hour shift. This is the equivalent of cleaning eleven 2,500 square foot homes in eight
hours. Our daytime custodians open the buildings, take care of cafeteria clean-up during breakfast and lunch as well as keeping the halls, restrooms and outside perimeter of the building clean during the day. They also respond to any emergency spills or clean-up needs. Responsibility of set-ups, tear-downs and clean-ups for all building reservations, seven days a week, also falls under the department. With 13,000 plus reservations per year, time must be set aside from cleaning duties to take care of reservations almost daily in all facilities. Substitute
Program: Our substitute program gives us
the opportunity to observe the work habits
of an employee prior to placing them in a
permanent position. All of our
employees begin as substitutes, working at
various campuses where there are absences.
As we have a vacancy, the substitute with
the most seniority is made permanent in that
vacancy.
Training: Judy Gomez, Operations Supervisor / Trainer does all of the interviewing for prospective Operations employees. Once hired as substitutes, Judy then conducts a two day training class within thirty days of their hire date. The training includes hazard communication, sexual harassment, asbestos awareness, District and department policies, cleaning procedures, equipment use and care, and cleaning procedures. The Head and Assistant Head Custodians also receive training in effective communication, progressive discipline and motivating employees. Additionally, quarterly training is provided to all employees to reinforce correct procedures for routine tasks, special projects, and to introduce new equipment.
