I joined the Katy ISD Maintenance team in September of 2006 in a newly created position that has allowed the district to focus more energy and expand it’s expertise in the area of grounds. As a new assistant director, I have implemented several changes which include:
-
Merging the campus
grounds and athletic grounds staffs, which allows us to be more flexible and
accommodate our tremendous growth more efficiently.
-
Restructuring our
equipment repair area which has allowed us to perform more repairs in-house and
has reduced equipment down time and reduced repair costs, saving the district
money.
-
Implementing a more
intensive safety training program, that has reduced personal injuries.
-
Developing positive
working relationships with all campuses and recognizing the professionalism of
our grounds staff.
A recent study
done by a professional grounds management
company noted that we have made progress in
improving our athletic fields in the last
twelve months.
My staff of 50 dedicated men works
tirelessly behind the scenes to support the
people of the Katy ISD community.

Requests for many types of repair or
maintenance work to the grounds, athletic
fields, and sprinkler systems are sent from
each school and the athletics department
through our web based maintenance management
program, and routed directly to me. On a
weekly basis, my supervisors and I
prioritize work to be done on grounds
throughout the district. Through School
Dude, we also have set up “PM.’s” , which
are work orders that automatically generate
on a pre-determined schedule to request
specific tasks be taken care of on our
grounds. Some of these tasks include
mowing, fertilizing, trimming, and other
treatments on a rotating basis. This works
to insure that the same quality standard is
met throughout the district. The Grounds
department has completed over 800 work
orders in the six months since converting to
School Dude on March 1st of 2007.
