"Whatever It Takes"

The Maintenance and Operations Departments goal for Katy ISD is to provide
exceptional support to students, staff and community. Our motto of
Whatever It Takes exemplifies our attitude and commitment to all
participants involved with Katy ISD. The Maintenance and Operations
administrative staff work as a single unit to provide the finest educational
leadership support team assembled. Katy ISD proper encompasses 181 square miles
providing educational services to approximately 54,000 students and is growing
at a rate of 2,000 to 4,000 students per year. Katy ISD maintains approximately
10,122,000 square feet of education and administrative facilities and roughly
2,138 acres of manicured athletic fields, school lawn or land purchased for our
growing district.
In order to aid our fast growing school district we currently own, occupy and
maintain 219 portable classroom buildings until new schools may be built.
The purchase of 30
new portables funded by the 2002 and 2006 Bonds
has effectively quadrupled our Summer
2007 work load compared to previous summers. In
addition, due to construction projects for campus additions and
renovations, we moved
40 portables to different locations. The
installation and relocation of 70
portables takes coordination between each campus, the moving contractor,
CenterPoint, our electricians, general maintenance, fire alarm technicians,
technology and fixed assets departments. This is a monumental task, as all the
work is completed with in-house labor with the exception of the actual moving of
the portables.
In order to meet
the next ten years growth, the District will require an additional 25 schools.
To prepare for this growth and maintain our facilities, the departments of
Maintenance, Construction, Purchasing, Technology, and other support divisions
come together and work toward a common goal: To construct and maintain
facilities that will positively impact the students of today and
tomorrow. Maintenance manages the buildings once constructed for the next 50+
years. The initial cost of constructing a school is only 20% of the total cost
of maintaining it throughout the life of the building.
The M & O Department serves as Katy ISD’s largest support service
organization in terms of personnel and budget. The Maintenance and Operations
department consists of 554 full-time employees with a total operating budget of
$36,719,021 for the 2007-2008 school year. The department maintains all
facilities with services in Maintenance, Operations, Grounds, Environmental
Quality, Energy Management, M & O Parts and Supply Warehousing, Small Engine
Repair, Minor Construction and bond projects not managed by the KISD
Construction Department. I feel the current staff of men and women in the M & O
department are the most dedicated and committed team ever assembled supporting
the students, staff and the Katy community.

Unfunded/Mandated programs
is a term most
associated with programs within the teaching ranks of a school system. Rest
assured the M&O Department works with dozens of Unfunded/Mandated programs set
forth by Federal, State and Local agencies. We do agree with their requirements
as they are
all for student, staff
and public safety. We
disagree with the fact that the State does not fund them.
Some of them are:
- Pool Treatment & Regulations
- Natural gas & propane line testing
- National Fire Protection Act
- Harassment training
- Playground Safety training
- Right to Know
- Freon (CFC)
- Hazardous Waste Disposal
- ADA
- Trailering

the cities of Katy & Houston
