Important information for parents of Sophomores and Juniors

Dear Parents and Students,

On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT/NMSQT® at their home campus. Taking the PSAT/NMSQT can encourage a student to start thinking seriously about life after high school, about college and career goals and about the education needed to reach those goals. The PSAT/NMSQT has been redesigned to mirror the redesigned SAT®.

Students can prepare for this exam by reviewing the information on the PSAT/NMSQT prep booklet available on each high school campus.

Katy ISD provides all students the academic opportunities needed to prepare them for college and beyond. Participation in the PSAT/NMSQT is an important step in preparing for college.

Every Katy ISD sophomore and junior is automatically registered to participate in the PSAT/NMSQT at their home campus on Wednesday, October 14, 2015.

In June, 2015, Khan Academy®, partnering with College Board released free interactive practice programs to support students to familiarize themselves with the redesigned exam. The customized test preparation will offer skill based videos to support the redesigned key changes for students who take the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2015. When students get their test results, they can connect their College Board and Khan Academy accounts to get free personalized SAT study recommendations.

Taking the PSAT/NMSQT provides the following advantages to students:

  •  It measures the reading, math, and writing skills needed for college (and for success in most jobs and careers in today’s world). After the test, a score report will tell students how their skills measure up. Students can use it to find their “skill gaps” and then make plans to fill these gaps before college begins.

  • Prepares students for the new redesigned SAT.

  • The Student Search Service® gives PSAT/NMSQT test takers the option to voluntarily place their names and addresses in a pool of college-bound students interested in receiving admission and financial aid information from certified colleges, universities and scholarship agencies.

  • Provides practice recommendations on Kahn Academy.

  • Junior who score well may qualify for National Merit Recognition and Scholarships.

  • It provides valuable information to parents and students on student potential for advanced academics in high school.

Score Reports will be distributed by February, 2016 at all KISD high schools. Along with the score reports, PSAT/NMSQT test takers will receive a unique access code to gain access to an online score reporting portal. From there students have access to all the college and career exploration programs available on College Board.

Every Katy ISD sophomore and junior is automatically registered to participate in the PSAT/NMSQT at their home campus on Wednesday, October 14, 2015.

What should students bring on test day?

  • No. 2 pencils and eraser

  • Approved calculator (four function, scientific, or graphing calculators – may not share calculators)

  • Email address (optional)

  • Current and valid school or government issued photo ID
