New to District
Students Previously Identified for Gifted Services
Students who are new to Katy ISD and who were identified for gifted service in their previous school or district may be screened for gifted service in Katy ISD as soon as possible after enrollment. Parents must provide documentation of identification for the gifted program in the previous school or district and must request screening within two weeks of enrollment to initiate the screening process. Placement decisions will be made within six weeks of initiating screening.
For students previously identified for gifted services, parents should bring the following items with them when enrolling in Katy ISD:
- Documentation of identification for the previous gifted program, such as an acceptance letter or report card which shows participation in a gifted program.
- Any scores available from nationally normed standardized tests administered in a school setting within the last two school years. Examples include the Stanford Achievement Test, the Metropolitan Achievement Test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the Woodcock-Johnson Battery, the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT), the Cognitive Ability Test (COGAT), and the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT). If such scores are not available, Katy ISD will administer any standardized tests required for a placement decision. Testing results from private sources are not accepted.
Parents of previously identified students should ask for a Parent Checklist when enrolling at a Katy ISD campus, or download one from the district website. The Parent Checklist is one component of the Katy ISD screening process. Return the Parent Checklist to the counseling office at the campus within two weeks of enrollment.
For more detailed information about GT screening for new students previously identified for a GT program, contact the Challenge teacher or counselor at the elementary campuses, or the GT Facilitator or counselor at junior high and high school campuses.
All Other Students New to Katy ISD
Students who are new to Katy ISD and who did not participate in the GT program in their previous school may be referred for GT screening during the regular Katy ISD GT screening window for possible service the following school year. Contact the GT Facilitator at your campus for information about the screening timeline that applies to your child’s enrollment date.
Parents interested in GT screening should submit the appropriate Parent Checklist by the published deadline for each grade level. Deadlines are announced through campus publications and on the district website.
Submitting the Gifted and Talented Parent Checklist during the appropriate screening window is the first step in the screening process for the Katy ISD Gifted and Talented Program and is a component in the screening process. Parents seeking gifted and talented screening for their child should complete the Parent Checklist and return a hard copy to the counseling office at their child’s campus by the deadline indicated for each grade level.
