Mina and Papa face a great loss with the death of Mama. Mina remembers her mother's last wish, “Papa will need you to be strong.” Spring finds Papa and Herr Kaufmann combining their money to purchase a wagon for both families to travel to New Braunsfels. The families leave the beach and make their way towards Victoria where they hope to buy supplies. On the way, Frau Kaufmann’s baby becomes ill and dies. With much tragedy behind them, they arrive in Victoria to be greeted by the Schumann family who takes them in to their home. The Schumanns offer them supper and a soft, warm place to sleep.
