Secondary Instruction

Junior High - Grades 6-8

The ten junior high schools have adopted the middle-school education approach that is sensitive to the academic, social and emotional needs of the adolescent. For the first year in junior high, the 6th grade students generally have 120-150 students assigned to a team of four or five teachers. The team coordinates class rules, academic and behavioral expectations and homework assignments. Instructional programs are coordinated so that students learn how one subject relates to another. While the emphasis is on the core subjects of English, reading, mathematics, science and social studies, junior high students also have the opportunity to explore many elective options. These options include the completion of some high school level mathematics and foreign language classes.

High School - Grades 9-12

Along with regular and advanced curriculum, the six high schools, Miller Career Center and the Opportunity Awareness Center are trail blazers with innovative course offerings. For example, students may enroll in college courses that earn dual high school credit (courses that earn both high school and college credit) or take Advanced Placement classes and AP exams for college credit. A multitude of elective courses address individual interests and aptitudes. A comprehensive extracurricular program provides students many opportunities to complement their studies through optional participation in fine arts and athletics.
