George Bush Park Fire Update

Sept. 14 @ 10:00 a.m.
The Katy ISD Office of Emergency Management and the Fire Chief have reported that the George Bush Park fire is not producing much smoke and the Public Health Department has not issued any air quality warnings. Therefore, restrictions on outdoor activities at Wolfe ES, Pattison ES, and McMeans JH have been lifted. All campuses are running regular outdoor school activities at this time. Campuses will however continue to monitor student activity with regards to the Ozone watch and extreme heat.

Sept. 14 @ 6:00 a.m.
Katy ISD’s Office of Emergency Management met with the Fire Chief this morning and they are reporting that there are no road closures and have been no evacuations. The fire is down to hot spots inside the reservoir. Smoke is mildly detectable outside Pattison and Wolfe Elementary Schools but not much at other campuses.

At this time, outdoor activities will be restricted for the following schools until after re-evaluation at 10:00 a.m.: Wolfe ES, Pattison ES, and McMeans JH. All other schools will continue to monitor and exercise caution today as extreme heat is expected along with an Ozone watch.

Sept. 13 @ 10:00 p.m.
A large fire has been burning inside the Barker Reservoir through George Bush Park. Winds have pushed the fire into the northern, wetter parts of the park where there is a road on the west side providing a barrier to the fire. The Fire Chief is reporting at this time that the fire is well contained with little chance of getting out of the fire breaks. The primary effect so far has been smoke and ash fallout to the north and northeast of the area with ash being seen as far north as Bear Creek Elementary. The majority of the smoke seems to be in the area over Wolfe Elementary. Katy ISD maintenance has turned off the outside air to all schools in the area as a precaution as we do not know where the smoke may shift during the evening hours. At this time, there is no direct threat to any schools.  Air quality continues to be a main concern and will be monitored through the morning by Katy ISD’s Office of Emergency Management.
