Extreme Heat Readiness Levels

Katy ISD uses four operational levels to prepare for extreme heat conditions.

Readiness Level 4 - Normal Operations

Throughout the school year, the District will monitor and plan for severe weather. The District will develop and maintain a close working relationship with the emergency management staff at the Harris County Office of Emergency Management, Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management, City of Katy, and the Texas State Regional Liaison Officer (RLO) for Region 2a and 2c. The District will also participate in regional planning and exercises.

Readiness activities include:

  • Monitor Heat Index.
  • Ensure that during any outdoor activities students have access to adequate drinking water.
  • Encourage students and staff members to engage in physical activity to maintain acclimation to warm weather.

Readiness Level 3

Readiness Level 3 is activated when the heat index reaches 100 degrees:

Readiness activities include:

  • Elementary school student's time on the playground or in outdoor activities should be limited to 20 minutes of activity between cooling down, preferably in the air conditioned building.
  • Elementary school students should be taken to get a drink of water after time on the playground before returning to class.
  • Secondary students in physical education, athletics or fine arts are to follow the guidelines for a Heat Index between 100 and 104 as established by the athletic department's sports medicine program.

Readiness Level 2

Readiness Level 2 is activated when the heat index is between 105 and 115.

Readiness activities include:

  • When the heat index is over 105 elementary schools should provide indoor activity time for students.
  • Secondary students in physical education, athletics or fine arts are to follow the guidelines for a Heat Index between 105 and 114 as established by the athletic department's sports medicine program. There are two sets of guidelines 105-109 and 110-114.
  • School buses should be loaded as quickly as possible. Students waiting to board should be staged in an air conditioned space.

Readiness Level 1

Readiness Level 1 is activated when the Heat Index is greater than 115.

Readiness activities include:

  • Outdoor recreation and workouts for all students are discontinued.
