Elementary Instruction

Kindergarten through Grade 5

Katy ISD uses proven instructional strategies so that children learn basic skills to build a foundation where critical thinking and other higher order thought processes are developed. However, to prepare students for the 21st century, state-of-the-art technology is used in the instructional programs. Along with regular classrooms, each of the 27 elementary schools contains art, music, and resource classrooms, as well as a library, computer lab, gymnasium and cafeteria. Katy ISD also offers a full-day Kindergarten program.

Communication skills such as reading, listening, writing and speaking are emphasized at each grade level. Reading as an essential skill is a primary focus. The mathematics program is anchored in the development of computation skills. That foundation is used to advance higher level thinking and to promote application of basic facts. Elementary science is primarily a hands-on approach. The students do science rather than take science. The social studies curriculum is a combination of facts and events with simulation, technology and activities often developed around a concept.
