Katy ISD Transportation is recruiting drivers at Job Fairs and events throughout our community – here is this year’s booth at the Katy Rice Harvest Festival, held every October in Downtown Katy.
Did you know that most of our School Bus Drivers have an average of 15 years of experience? Our ‘most experienced’ driver that’s still driving has over 30 years of experience!
Some of our drivers used to be in the military, body builders, radio station disc jockeys, even a Philadelphia Police Detective! A LOT of our drivers had different jobs before they became parents, and they started driving a school bus because of our on-site day care! They keep driving when their kids get older because it allows them to still volunteer at their kid’s schools, and be off of work on the same holidays that their kids are.
Our mechanics take care of the district’s police cars, maintenance vans and work trucks as well as taking care of ALL of our buses!
School Bus Drivers take 6 written tests and 12 to 14 hours of behind the wheel training before they can take the driving test and become a licensed school bus driver. They even have to parallel park a school bus!
All School Bus Drivers in the State of Texas are required to take a 20-hour Safety Training Certification course, with an 8-hour recertification every 3 years. These classes are taught on-site by our state certified trainers at the East and West Transportation Centers.
