Fourth Grade Lessons in the Spring Semester

Social Studies

Fourth Grade OLC Social Studies Lessons:

The fourth grade teachers have several options from which to choose for their students when they visit the Outdoor Learning Center.  The history classroom building houses a teaching historical museum and a one room pioneer school house.  The teacher may choose to teach the pioneer school house lesson, the history artifact lesson or selected parts of each lesson during their visit.  The teachers receive training to teach the lessons at the OLC prior to visiting with their students.

The Pioneer Schoolhouse Lesson:

This lesson is the recreation of a day of school in the life of a child attending a one room schoolhouse in the mid to late 1800's.  This lesson mainly takes place in the portion of the history building which houses a recreation of a one-room pioneer schoolhouse.  The teacher may choose to have the students walk to the barnyard to pump a bucket of water and pick up several sticks of firewood to bring back to the classroom.   The students participate in several school activities which includes: writing at calligraphy tables with pen and ink, math lessons using slate boards and chalk, spelling bees, practicing recitation and reading from pioneer era reading books.  The teacher and students may choose to wear "period clothing" over their regular clothing if they choose to do so.  The teachers receive training to teach the lessons at the OLC prior to visiting with their students.

The Historical Artifact Lesson:

This lesson utilizes the many historical artifacts on display in the history classroom. Fifty artifacts are numbered and arranged for study in the museum portion of the history classroom.  The students may work alone or with partners and move around to observe the artifacts and discover how they were used by the early pioneers.   Images of these artifacts and lesson documents are available on the internet to the fourth grade teachers to use to introduce the lesson at the campus before the OLC visit and to use for follow up activities after the OLC visit.
