Staff | Pre-Kindergarten Program | Dyslexia | PEP | Homebound/Hospital Services | Title I

Compensatory Education offers supplementary programs or services designed to improve and enhance the educational achievement of students who have been identified as at risk according to state guidelines. These services or programs provide intensive or accelerated instruction that enable students to perform at the appropriate grade level and to graduate.

To be eligible to participate in a compensatory program, Katy I.S.D. uses student performance data from various sources such as skills assessments, class performance, and TAKS scores.  Based on the information from these and other sources, the campus staff will recommend the supplemental services that should be provided to enhance student-learning opportunities.

Examples of supplemental support include: mentoring, before- and after- school tutorials, reduced pupil/teacher classroom ratios, individual and small group instruction, credit restoration courses, summer school, and academic support for pregnant and parenting students.

Program Information:

Our Pre-kindergarten program follows the state guidelines set for Pre-k which focus on oral language development, reading and math readiness, as well as developing science and social studies knowledge and skills.

All students are given a pre/mid-year/post assessment of basic skills.  Report cards are marked for social skills every six weeks and academic skills for the third and last six weeks grading period.  A parent conference will be scheduled during the fall semester.  Other conferences may be held at parent and/or teacher request.

Pre-kindergarten Enrollment and School Attendance:

Pre-kindergarten is not a mandatory program.  However, if your child qualifies and is enrolled, he/she is subject to compulsory attendance law.  Your child must attend school each day, Monday through Friday.

For information you may call the above school closest to your home or Cindy Franklin, Katy ISD Early Childhood Intervention Specialist, at (281)237-2429.

Dyslexia

Individuals with dyslexia often need special programs to learn to read, write and spell. Katy ISD provides a structured, systematic language arts curriculum for students identified as having specific characteristics of dyslexia. This is multi-sensory program, which involves all pathways of learning simultaneously -- seeing, touching, hearing, writing and speaking. If a child is having difficulties in the area of language (reading, writing and spelling) parents may contact the teacher or counselor for additional dyslexia information.

For information about the dyslexia program, contact Dr. Deborah Masterson at 281-237-6367.

PEP - Pregnancy Education and Parenting Program

This program provides services to pregnant and/or parenting students (male or female) who endeavor to complete requirements for a diploma. A variety of components are included within the program such as, career and job readiness training, counseling, parenting skills, etc.

Homebound/Hospital Services

Purpose

Homebound Services are designed to provide continuity of educational services between the classroom and the home/hospital setting for students whose medical needs prevent school attendance on a campus.

Explanation of Services

A certified teacher will provide instruction for students who qualify for Homebound Services. Determination of services is based on individual student needs. Students must be served two to four hours each week in order to meet Compulsory Attendance requirements. Instructional accommodations will be made in accordance with the severity of the accident or illness.

Eligibility

Any student who is served through the Homebound Program must meet all of the following three criteria:

  1. The student's condition must be medical only.
  2. The student's medical condition must be documented by a physician licensed to practice in the United States.
  3. The student must be expected to be confined at home or hospital bedside for a minimum of four consecutive weeks.

It is the policy of Katy ISD not to discriminate on the basis of sex, disability, race, religion, color, or national origin in its educational programs and/or activities nor in its employment practices.
