What is the Spelling Grading Policy? In accordance with the
KISD Elementary Grading and Reporting
Handbook, the core area numerical grades are as follows:
A - 90-100
B - 80-89
C - 75-79
D - 70-74
F - 69 below
The spelling grade is an individual subject grade, but it is also calculated into a Language Arts grade which is indicated on the report card. The Language Arts grade is weighted to count reading as 60%, language as 30%, and spelling as 10 percent. Assessment of student progress in spelling is reflected in weekly word list tests, spelling dictation sentences or paragraphs, six weeks tests, and homework. These spelling components are weighted in the following manner:
| |
Grades 1-4 |
Grades 5 |
| Word List Tests |
90% (word tests are entered two times) |
45% |
| Dictation* |
(Dictation tests are entered one time as a spelling grade and one time as a language grade in grades where students are taking dictation involving sentences). |
40% |
| Homework |
10% |
15% |
*In everyday life, writing is composed of spelling, punctuation,
and capitalization. Therefore, the dictation component in spelling will also count as a daily grade in language.
****Spelling homework in grades one, two and three is not graded but is documented as a WORK HABIT and indicated on the right hand side of the report card.
