Pre-Kindergarten Program

To qualify for the pre-kindergarten program, the child must reside in Katy ISD and be four years old on or before Sept. 1, 2008. The child must also meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Limited English proficient because a language other than English is the primary language spoken in the home. Students qualifying by language will be tested on the day of registration to determine placement in the program.
  • Qualify according to the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines. Parents must bring proof of income of all persons employed within the home. Proof of income can include current check stubs, child support statement of payment, food stamp qualification letter, etc.
  • The family is homeless.
  • Have a parent who is an active member of the armed forces. Parent must present their Department of Defense photo identification (military ID). An active member of the Texas National Guard must provide a “Statement of Service” document.
  • The child is or ever has been in the conservatorship of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. A letter from DFPS or Foster Child documentation must be provided.

Pre-kindergarten classes will be held at the following campuses for 2009-2010:


Spanish speaking classes will be held at Bear Creek, Fielder, Franz, Hutsell, King, McRoberts, Memorial Parkway, Morton Ranch, Rhoads, Schmalz, Stephens, and Sundown.

English speaking classes will be held at Alexander, Bear Creek, Cimarron, Creech, Exley, Golbow, Griffin, Hayes, Holland, Katy, Mayde Creek, McRoberts, Memorial Parkway, Morton Ranch, Rhoads, Rylander, Stephens, Sundown, West Memorial, Williams, and Winborn.

Children attend either morning (8:20-11:20) or afternoon (12:40-3:40) classes. Parents or guardians must provide transportation to and from school.

  1. Limited English proficient because a language other than English is the primary language spoken in the home. Students qualifying by language will be tested on the day of registration to determine placement in the program.

  • Qualify according to the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines. Parents must bring proof of income of all persons employed within the home (documentation for at least one month of income). Proof of income can include current check stubs, child support statement of payment, food stamp qualification letter, etc. All those who qualify by income at spring registration must have their income re-verified on August 12 at the pre-k campus they will attend.

  • The family is homeless.

  • Have a parent who is an active member of the armed forces. Parent must present their Department of Defense photo identification (military ID). An active member of the Texas National Guard must provide a “Statement of Service” document.

  • The child is or ever has been in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services. A letter from DFPS or Foster Child documentation must be provided.

On the day of registration, parents must provide immunization records, a birth certificate, social security number, if available, proof of residency in Katy ISD (a home or apartment lease agreement, a recently paid utility bill with correct name and Katy ISD address of parent or guardian, or a letter from a mortgage company indicating approval of permanent financing for a residence in Katy ISD), and guardianship papers if the child resides with someone other than a parent.

Program Information:

Our Pre-kindergarten program follows the state guidelines set for Pre-k which focus on oral language development, reading and math readiness, as well as developing science and social studies knowledge and skills.

All students are given a pre/mid-year/post assessment of basic skills. Report cards are marked for social skills every six weeks and academic skills for the third and last six weeks grading period. A parent conference will be scheduled during the fall semester. Other conferences may be held at parent and/or teacher request.

Pre-kindergarten Enrollment and School Attendance:

Pre-kindergarten is not a mandatory program. However, if your child qualifies and is enrolled, he/she is subject to compulsory attendance law. Your child must attend school each day, Monday through Friday.
