Katy ISD Addresses Mayan Calendar Rumors
- One of the things that the district faces from time to time are rumors that some sort of disruptive activity will be occurring on one or more Katy ISD campus. Most often, these occur at specific times of the year, typically before a holiday, the end of the school year, or in conjunction with speculation about long-held traditions or folklore.
-
- This week, rumors have been revolving around the Mayan calendar and what some have considered as various interpretations of a prediction that points to the “end of the world” this Friday, December 21, 2012. The rumors that have been brought to our attention suggest students engaging in possible violent activities. As expected, these types of rumors and the speculation about threats can cause a great deal of appropriate concern about student safety and security.
-
- Whenever rumors of this nature come to our attention, district and campus administration, along with Katy ISD Police, proactively investigate its validity. This typically involves talking to students with first-hand knowledge of the origins of these rumors to look for evidence that any of the threats are credible. To date, no evidence has been found to validate any of the threats being made in the rumors that are currently circulating.
-
- Respect is one of the core student values in Katy ISD and is important to foster not only a positive learning environment, but a successful and supportive community. We are extremely proud of our students for being forthcoming with information and their willingness to help us maintain safe schools.
-
- Most often rumors, both violent and nonviolent, are fueled by comments on Facebook and Twitter, raising tension and concern among students and parents. Katy ISD would like to encourage you to please be aware of who your kids are communicating with and what is being said on social networking sites like Facebook. Being aware of your student’s participation in these online communities may help diffuse situations before they become a problem. For more information about how to keep your child safe online, please take a moment to review the Digital Citizenship resources available on the Katy ISD Website.

- Student security and preservation of a safe learning environment is our primary concern in Katy ISD. If you have any questions regarding current rumors being circulated in Katy, please contact the Parent and Patron Assistance Center at 281-396-2441.
