McMeans JH Student Wins District Spelling Bee for Second Time
Winner to Attend HoustonPBS Regional Spelling Bee

McMeans JH student Lance Gopilan won the Katy ISD Spelling Bee in both 2011 and 2012. He will represent the district in the HoustonPBS Regional Spelling Bee this March.
(Feb. 10, 2012) – McMeans Junior High student Lance Gopilan won First Place in the 2012 Katy ISD Spelling Bee that took place this week.  Gopilan’s winning word was “opacate” in the bee that went for more than two hours.  Lance also won the 2011 Katy ISD Spelling Bee.  The 2012 Runner Up is Gian Carlo Lara, a student at Mayde Creek Elementary.  Both students went home with a large trophy donated by Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy.  Students represented all 44 of Katy ISD’s elementary and junior high campuses.

“It is exciting to be able to send a talented young man like Lance back to the Regional Bee from Katy ISD,” said Emily Craig, assistant principal at WoodCreek Junior High, and one of the organizers of the 2012 Spelling Bee.  “I am very proud of the young men and women who competed from our elementary and junior high schools.  They should be very proud of their accomplishments.”

Each year, Katy ISD fourth through eighth grade students complete a qualifying spelling test at their home campus.  The top scoring students are invited to participate in campus-level spelling bees.  A First Place winner and an alternate from each Katy ISD elementary (grades 4 and 5) and junior high campus  (grades 6 through 8) are invited to the district spelling bee where they receive a certificate and trophy for their campus win.  First Place winners, and alternates when applicable, participate in the district bee for a chance to move on to the regional level.

The HoustonPBS Regional Spelling Bee covers 42 counties and will take place on March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the PBS studios at the University of Houston, and will be broadcast live on HoustonPBS. The regional competition is the qualifying bee for the Scripps National Spelling Bee that will take place at the end of May in Washington, D.C.
