Pre-AP Parent Night
For Parents of 5th Grade Students Entering Junior High

(Dec. 10, 2012) – On Monday, January 14, 2013, parents of fifth grade students who will attend a Katy ISD junior high in 2013-2014 are invited to attend an orientation to Katy ISD’s Pre-AP and Advanced Placement (AP) program. Parents may choose to attend any one session.  Sessions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. will be held at the Katy ISD Education Support Complex, 6301 S. Stadium Lane and last approximately one hour.  An evening session will be held at Morton Ranch High School, 21000 Franz Road, in the Main Commons.  This session will begin at 7 p.m. and last approximately one hour.

Alene Lindley, Katy ISD director of secondary curriculum, GT and advanced academic studies, and Cathy Prudhomme, GT and advanced academic studies program specialist, will present an overview of the Advanced Placement Program and will address commonly asked questions about student participation in Pre-Advanced Placement courses.

A Pre-AP course of study is designed to prepare students to be successful in Advanced Placement courses. AP courses are generally available to juniors and seniors at each of the Katy ISD high schools. AP courses provide students the opportunity to engage in college level studies with the option of taking an AP exam and possibly qualifying for college credit. In addition, research indicates that students who participate in an Advanced Placement course are more likely to complete an undergraduate program, more likely to choose academically challenging majors in college and more likely to pursue an advanced degree. Katy ISD offers Advanced Placement courses in the following disciplines – English, social studies, science, mathematics, languages other than English, computer science, music and art.
