The Simon Youth Academy at Katy Mills opened in September of 2016 through a partnership between the Katy Independent School District and the Simon Youth Foundation (SYF). The Academy is a small, innovative learning environment that allows for a modified school schedule, so students can take care of other responsibilities while also working on high school completion. Curriculum is facilitated by content certified teachers via Edgenuity and Canvas online learning platforms. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Academy daily with daily attendance expected.
Who is eligible to attend the Simon Youth Academy?
Eligible students are those who have previously dropped out from their Katy ISD home campus within the current school year but who would like to return and re-commit to work towards earning their high school diploma and still reside within the Katy ISD school attendance zone. Potential students should contact the Academy directly for specific process directions at 281-396-6050.
What does the partnership with Simon Youth Foundation offer students who do attend Simon Youth Academy?
Being a part of the Simon Youth Foundation network allows staff and students the opportunity for enhancement grants to enrich instruction and professional learning. More importantly, students who graduate from the Simon Youth Academy at Katy Mills are eligible to apply for scholarship funds from SYF that will support a four year college, community college or a vocational/skill program and/or certification.
What does the Simon Youth Academy offer to students who have challenges attending a full school day?
The Academy offers a flexible schedule for students who have responsibilities outside of school, such as work, being caregivers for family members or their own children. Students select to attend either the morning session. 8:00am – 12:00pm, or the afternoon session, 12:30pm – 4:30pm. All students are offered and provided lunch from 12:00 – 12:30 daily.
