Katy ISD Accepting Nominations for Student Support AnnexKaty ISD Accepting Nominations for Student Support Annex2018-10-23T00:29:50Z<div class="ExternalClass5A6BAB5A72BC417FB9A979A0E35BF147"><p><span style="text-align:justify;"></span></p><p><div style="color:#222222;background-color:#ffffff;"><p><strong>Katy ISD is now accepting nominations for the naming of the Student Support Annex.</strong> The Student Support Annex (SSA) served as a temporary school last year for Creech Elementary students displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Prior to that, the building was home to the University of Houston satellite campus. It is now owned by Katy ISD. <br></p><p>The SSA will now house Katy ISD's Early Childhood Testing, the Work-Based Learning Program, Speech Therapy Testing, Vision Impaired and Braille staff, Occupational and Physical Therapy, and other special education related services working together toward the success of all students. <br></p><p>The deadline for submitting nominations is October 29, 2018. <br></p><p>Individuals interested in submitting a facility name are asked to fill out and submit the <a href="/dept/sb/Documents/School%20Naming/CWExhibitA.pdf"><strong>Nomination for Student Support Annex</strong></a>. Challenge is the KISD Gifted and Talented ProgramChallenge is the KISD Gifted and Talented Program2018-10-16T17:01:22Z<div class="ExternalClass543F4FFB92144D8FBF013BF66CA20CA6"><p>​</p><p>Challenge is the KISD Gifted and Talented Program.  We use a "pull-out" model for our classes and meet one day a week.  The class focuses on general intellectual ability using a theme-based advanced curriculum with high interest units using various technology sites and resources.  At Rhoads and Franz, we also learn about our social/emotional needs and participate in Genius Hour.</p><p style="text-align:center;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>GIFTED/TALENTED SCREENING INFORMATION:</strong></span></p><p><strong>KINDERGARTEN: </strong>To have your child screened for Gifted and Talented services, you need to submit a Parent Checklist. Parent Checklists must be turned in by 4:00 p.m. on <strong>October 5, 2018</strong>. NO late checklists are accepted.  Placement decisions will be mailed home in February 2019.</p><p><strong>Kindergarten G/T services begin the first week of March for approximately 1 hour per week.</strong></p><p><strong>5th GRADE</strong>: Students currently in fifth grade are screened to begin services in 6th grade. To have your child screened for Gifted and Talented services, you need to submit a Secondary Parent Checklist. Secondary Parent Checklists may be picked up at the front office, from the counselor, or downloaded from the KatyISD website.Checklists must be turned in by 4:00 p.m. on <strong>September 20, 2018.</strong> Indicate which content areas you would like your child screened for. NO late checklists are accepted. Placements decisions will be mailed home in January 2019.</p><p><strong>1st-4th GRADES</strong>: To have your child screened for Gifted & Talented services, you need to submit an Elementary Parent Checklist. Elementary Parent Checklists must be turned in by 4:00 p.m. on <strong>December 5, 2018</strong>. NO late checklists are accepted.  Placements decisions will be mailed home in June 2019.</p><p>Students who qualify for Challenge after screening will begin services the following school year.<br></p><p><br></p></div>
Registration Open! Legacy Parent Academy: Mental Health Services in TexasRegistration Open! Legacy Parent Academy: Mental Health Services in Texas2018-10-15T14:44:05Z<div class="ExternalClassAB510558886E404497D6FAD218B0F7FB"><p style="text-align:justify;"><img src="/PublishingImages/Lists/latestnews/AllItems/LegacyParentAcademy_on_blue.jpg" alt="LegacyParentAcademy_on_blue.jpg" style="margin:5px;width:422px;" />Registration is now open for the next Katy ISD Legacy Parent Academy event set for <span style="text-decoration-line:underline;"><strong>Wednesday, October 24 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Legacy Stadium in Rooms ABC.</strong></span>  The session will focus on Mental Health Services in Texas. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">The workshop will help identify mental health services and support available to Texas students, adults and families.  Participants will gain knowledge regarding the process for obtaining these services, possible barriers when requesting them as well as understanding the role both schools and parents have in getting access to various services. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">This session will be presented in collaboration with the Katy ISD Police Department.  Katy ISD Legacy Parent Academy educational sessions are free and specifically designed to equip parents with the strategies and techniques to support their children.  Sessions taking place throughout the school year will include experts on a variety of topics which can be viewed on our <a href="/parents/Pages/Legacy-Parent-Academy.aspx">Legacy Parent Academy website</a>.  </p><p>We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!</p><p><br></p></div>
Katy ISD Participates in National Prescription Drug Take Back EventKaty ISD Participates in National Prescription Drug Take Back Event2018-10-05T20:35:48Z<div class="ExternalClass73E2AE27FF3541F58B10767ED0BD9B25"><p><span style="text-align:justify;">The Katy ISD Police Department in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to safely dispose of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications.  According to the DEA, pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor's supervision.  Needles or sharp objects will not be accepted and any liquids must be in prescribed containers.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.</span><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">"Many families could be harboring dangerous prescription drugs in their own medicine cabinet without even knowing it," said Katy ISD Police Chief Robert Jinks.  "Not disposing of these medications creates an easy access for students to obtain and abuse this types of prescriptions.  Through the drug take back program residents have a better and safe option to dispose of these items," added Jinks.  </p><p>Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Last April, Americans turned in 309 tons (over 617,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 5,500 sites operated by the DEA.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>What:</strong><strong>           <br></strong><strong>National Prescription Drug Take Back Event</strong></p><p><strong>Where:</strong>         <br>Mark L.
