Katy ISD junior high students receive superior rankings at the Junior High Visual Art Scholastic Event Katy ISD junior high students receive superior rankings at the Junior High Visual Art Scholastic Event 2014-06-06T14:03:25Z<div class="ExternalClassC88DD7C6A66B48C6B0C10C8DB00F8030"><p>​Students from Beckendorff, Cinco Ranch, Katy, West Memorial and Woodcreek junior high schools submitted a total of 131 pieces of artwork to the Junior High Visual Art Scholastic Event. <br> <br>The Jr VASE program (formerly Junior VASE) is the only art event of its kind in the nation which provides students the opportunity to bring artworks created in their art classes to a regional event where they are interviewed by a certified juror who evaluates their work based on a standard based rubric and their understanding of the art processes involved in the development of their artwork.<br> <br>Of the 131 student entries, 93 were rated ‘Superior’ and advanced to compete for the ‘Best of the Superior Ratings’. Beckendorff Junior High named a School to Watch across 19 statesBeckendorff Junior High named a School to Watch across 19 states2014-06-06T13:35:59Z<div class="ExternalClassEC64CC24BF714D1890549EE7B4575008"><p>​Beckendorff Junior High School has been named a School to Watch by the prestigious Schools to Watch® initiative, now in 19 states, for its capacity to promote academic achievement in a safe and caring learning environment where every student is positioned to succeed in high school and beyond. <br> <br>The National Forum’s Schools to Watch® program offers a powerful set of criteria against which educators and parents can assess their school’s performance, and identify and promote best practices in the middle grades. <br> <br>Beckendorff Junior High will be recognized at the 10th annual Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, DC from June 25-28, 2014. </p></div>
Katy ISD Honored Fallen Soldiers with Activities District-wideKaty ISD Honored Fallen Soldiers with Activities District-wide2014-05-27T20:50:12Z<div class="ExternalClass4AB495C127A14C14ABC050C6BCA1E9C6"><p>​On Monday, all throughout Katy ISD, campuses hosted a variety of activities to celebrate Memorial Day and honor fallen soldiers in partnership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9182 and parents and staff who currently or formerly served in the military.<br> <br>The celebrations began shortly before 8 a.m. at the <a href="" target="_blank">Katy ISD Education Support Complex </a>with a 21 gun salute by the Katy ISD Police Department and the national anthem sung by WoodCreek Jr. High Choir Director Christin Abbott. <br> <br>Later in the morning, students and staff from Mayde Creek elementary, junior high and high school were joined by local veterans, community members and Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey as they paid tribute to fallen soldiers during a <a href="" target="_blank">special ceremony </a>featuring the Mayde Creek junior high band, members of the Student Council and National Junior Honor Society, and the Mayde Creek high school ROTC students. <br> <br>Additionally, local veterans led the pledge of allegiance at many campuses and visited history and social studies classrooms throughout the day to share their experiences serving the country. Beckendorff Junior High students crowned champions at the 30th Annual Science Olympiad National TournamentBeckendorff Junior High students crowned champions at the 30th Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament2014-05-27T19:39:49Z<div class="ExternalClassB7119FEFB7D04BF082DA253F0ACE82F8"><p>​Beckendorff Junior High’s Science Olympiad Team were crowned the champions at the <a href="" target="_blank">30th Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament </a>on May 17 at the University of Central Florida. Additionally, a Seven Lakes High School’s team received 7th place in the nation in the high school division.<br> <br>Over 7,000 teams and 200,000 students nationwide participated in the Science Olympiad, one of the nation’s most prestigious science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions. <br> <br>Science Olympiad brings together 120 winning middle school and high school teams advancing from state-level competitions during the spring. This competition challenges the participants with rigorous hands-on, building and lab events led by experts from government agencies, top universities and Science Olympiad state chapters covering topics in physics, epidemiology, astronomy, chemistry, meteorology and engineering.<br> <br>Science Olympiad is a Chicago-area-based national nonprofit organization founded in 1984.
