Parent Centers located at Hayes, Hutsell, Mayde Creek and Sundown elementary schools offer day programs. Morton Ranch High School offers an evening program. Classes and childcare services for children 18 months through pre-school age are available at no cost to the parent. This link provides a short informational video about the Parent Centers. Share with staff and/or post to your campus website to increase awareness about the benefits of this program. Parent Center enrollment is open throughout the school year. If you have parents of English learners inquiring about the opportunity to learn English, refer them to the Parent Center at Hayes Elementary (281) 237-3262

SCHOOL REPORT CARD - Katy ISD is sharing information about the state, district and your child's campus as part of the state legislative requirements. Copies of the 2018-19 School Report Cards for the state, district and campus are available for your review in the front office of our school, or can be accessed online at https://rptsvr1.tea.texas.gov/perfreport/src/2019/campus.srch.html.

VAPING INFORMATION - Katy ISD and the American Heart Association, the world's leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health, have partnered to build awareness around the dangers of vaping. The number of teens who vape has more than doubled in just the past two years, to five million, according to the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey. More than one in four high school students report vaping. In addition, e-cigarettes can contain unusually high levels of nicotine – in fact, one e-cigarette pod can contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Youth who vape are particularly susceptible to nicotine addiction, which rewires the developing brain. Help spread the word using Katy ISD's hashtag: #QuitLyingAboutVaping and consider signing the AHA letter to hold Big Vape accountable.   Parent Tips for Talking to Teens About Vaping (from the Surgeon General)

STUDENT COUNCIL - Families, I am excited to announce that we have officially kicked off our Pennies for Patients program!  Your child should have come home with their own collection box and a flyer.  This year, we are also encouraging students, with your assistance, to create an online page to receive donations, so that our school can make our biggest impact ever to cure blood cancer! The fundraiser will last from 1/7/2020-1/17/2020.  The advisory class that collects the most money will earn a free Olive Garden lunch, which is catered here at school for them.  Be sure that all online donations are made under your student's name so that their class gets credit.  Join our squad by clicking on the link:   https://events.lls.org/pages/txg/WestMemorialJrHighSchool-2020  When heroes work together, we change cancer!

SCHOOL HOLIDAY – MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 – NO SCHOOL

PICTURES – School pictures were taken last week.  Just in case you didn't get a chance to order your child's pictures, there is still time.  Go online to www.strawbridge.net and enter code: FM317960.  Picture makeup day will be on October 17 in case your child missed getting their picture taken today.

FUNDRAISER – Our school wide fundraiser is in full swing!  As you look through the order form to place your orders, think ahead about the holidays, gift ideas, quick cookie treats.  The school receives a percentage of each item sold and that money goes back into programs benefiting the students.  Your support of this fundraiser is appreciated!  All money and orders are due back to the school on Friday, September 6.

DROP OFF & PICK UP -Students should not be dropped off at school before 8:10am. Prior to this time the school staff is not available to monitor student activity in the building.  Parents should pick students up from school no later than 4:00pm or at the stated ending time of a special activity. Timely pick-up will ensure that adequate school personnel are available to supervise our students as they wait.  For safety and security reasons, all afternoon student checkouts must be completed by 3:45pm.  Children cannot be checked out after 3:45pm.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

For safety purposes, parents are not permitted to drop their students off in the staff parking lot or bus circle.  There are two parent designated drop off locations (Parent drive off Provincial Blvd. by A hall and by the gym off Promenade).  Students should not be dropped off in a non-designated area.

CONCESSIONS – Volleyball season has started and the concessions stand is open.  Looking for a way to help out?  Do you come bring your child to their game and then wonder what you can do while waiting for the game to start?  WE NEED YOU!  We have one of the best concession stands around for junior highs and we pride ourselves on this.  But it can only continue to be successful with your help…..WE NEED YOU!  Whether you are a sports fan or just an enthusiastic volunteer, please consider donating 30 minutes, an hour or more of your time to help the school.  Here is the sign up link  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C4BA8A72BA31-wmjh11.  Even if you can only help for 30 minutes, indicate that on your sign up comment.  If you have any questions, call Dianne (281) 237-6406 or diannecorn@katyisd.org

PTA NEWS – Our PTA is a wonderful organization that helps out the school, the students, and our staff.  When you join the PTA for only $8, a portion of your dues goes back to the school to help fund things like the concessions, the PBIS reward store, author visits, book wars, and so much more.  A membership envelope is attached.  PTA also sells spirit items:  yard signs, spirit socks, hoodies.  The order forms are attached.  Send them with money to the front office. Anytime you can volunteer to help us out, we appreciate it.  Fill out the form attached and let us know where you would like to help out.

BOX TOPS – Yes, we do collect box tops in junior high!  You can still send in the box tops that you clip.  Each box top is worth $0.10 each to our school and it can really add up.  Call the school if you have any questions.

ANNUAL STUDENT UPDATE - This electronic, online process is required yearly for all current Katy ISD students. This process will allow parents and guardians the opportunity to electronically review, update and sign all documentation for your child in one spot. All parents are required to update their student's information prior to the start of each school year.  All parents and guardians will receive a unique SnapCode for each child currently enrolled in Katy ISD to their email address on file. ATTENDANCE - Just some reminders for the upcoming school year.   Students are allowed 8 personal illnesses in a 6 month period. This is when you write a note for the absence.   If you go to a doctor's appointment, don't forget to get a school excuse from them, this will save your personal illness notes. Be sure to call Helen Helm at 281-237-6405 or email helenjhelm@katyisd.org the day your student is out of school so that you don't get that phone call from the district.   Have a great school year!

FROM THE CLINIC -  ATTENTION 6TH GRADE PARENTS:  Please review your 6th grader's shot record and take note of what he/she will need before entry into 7th grade.  If your child is missing any immunizations, you should be receiving a letter by mail.  The following is a listing of immunization rules that affect all Texas students entering 7th grade:

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap):  Tdap is required for all students entering 7th grade if at least 5 years has lapsed since the last dose of a tetanus containing vaccine (DTap, DPT, DT).  If 5 years have not elapsed since the last dose of a tetanus containing vaccine at entry into 7th grade, then this dose will become due as soon as the 5 year interval has passed. Td is acceptable if Tdap is medically contraindicated.

Meningococcal Vaccine:  One dose is required for all students entering 7th

Additional information regarding these immunizations including exemptions from immunizations can be obtained through the Texas Department of Health website www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school.  Shot documentation needs to be stamped or signed by the facility and include the month, day and year the vaccine was given.  Computer print outs are valid only if the administering facility has stamped/signed the print out.  Please keep a copy for your records when submitting them to the WMJH Clinic.  If your child has already received these immunizations please submit them to school clinic, fax to 281-644-1677, or email to rebeccalbarrera@katyisd.org before the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.  If they receive them over the summer, you can fax or email the updated records.   Schedules will be held at expedition night on August 8 if updated records have not been turned in. You can turn them in that night but will have to turn them in to the school clinic and there will be a long line so if you can turn them in before that night it will be beneficial to you.
