Due to the size of our student population and schools, preparing students and staff to respond to active events and threats is imperative. One of the trainings being provided to elementary students this year is called “Run, Hide, Fight.” Similar training is being used by school districts and law enforcement agencies nationwide. Below is a description of the training that will be provided in Katy ISD elementary schools.

Elementary

Students will rely on and follow the direction of their trained teachers in the execution of the Active Threat response strategy (Run, Hide, Fight).

Schools execute “LOCK DOWN” drills in which elementary teachers rehearse how they will respond when alerted to a threat being inside or outside the campus.

During scheduled drills, students will rehearse how to prepare in the event of a threat in the school. However, the extent of defining the threat to elementary students will be limited to “stranger/danger” or a dog in the hallways, depending on the age/grade level of the students.

We encourage parents to discuss these topics with their students as they relate to schools as well as environments/locations outside of the school building.

While Katy ISD views this training as beneficial in preparing elementary students to be better aware of their surroundings and to respond to an active threat in school as well as other environments, We understand that maturity levels do vary. Therefore, the AVOID (RUN), DENY (HIDE) and DEFEND (FIGHT) training video will NOT be shown to elementary students by the district. However, staff will be trained using the video and teachers will conduct emergency drills using strategies demonstrated in the video.

We are providing a link to this video for parent education and for use by parent(s) to show their student should they so desire.
Elementary video - SAUSD Run Hide Fight (Elementary School)
These videos are also offered to our volunteers who spend many hours on our campuses. Viewing the videos can assist in providing a greater understanding of how to respond should one be in a Katy ISD facility during a very unlikely event of an active threat.

If you have any questions about this training, please contact Mr. Wolff, Assistant Principal and Safety Liaison at or 281.234.0068.

Increase in Late Arrivals & Early Checkouts

With the colder weather, we have seen an increase of unexcused tardies in the morning. Please remember, all students who enter the building after 8:00am are considered tardy and will need parents to check them in. We are also seeing an increase of early checkouts in the afternoon. At times, students may have doctor appointments and some unforeseen circumstances. With that said, your child benefits from being here all day. Please keep in mind that tardies/early checkouts mean that there is more classroom interruptions, which distracts from the flow of instruction. If your child leaves early or is tardy, he or she is not benefiting from a full day of instruction, which in turn could cause them to fall behind. We are here to partner with you to ensure that your child succeeds in school. Having a routine that allows them to be on time and present for every class greatly benefits your child. Thank you for partnering with us to making the most of your child's learning.

Please note that all students are encouraged to participate in school for the entire day this Friday during Fall Parties. Checking students out after the party is both discouraged and unexcused. Instruction and learning activities continue all day long as essential learning is planned. Please help reinforce the importance of learning by keeping your child in school the entire day. As always, there is no student check-out after 2:40 pm.

Bullying Prevention and Intervention Resources

Katy ISD is pleased to share information with parents regarding our district-wide bullying prevention and intervention resources. Please visit the Katy ISD Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.today to learn more, including how to recognize bullying behavior, and Katy ISD's rigorous bullying prevention policies.

Dyslexia Parent and Educator Information

The Katy ISD Office of Interventions is pleased to share additional information with both parents and educators on dyslexia. This course is free and available to anyone who would like to learn more about dyslexia. It is designed to provide parents, educators and community members with resources to explore dyslexia. Visit the Dyslexia Parent and Educator Information course online through Canvas today!

<span style="font-size:14pt;font-family:"khmer ui", sans-serif;color:black;">WCE GT Screening<span style="font-size:14pt;font-family:"khmer ui", sans-serif;color:#1f497d;"> <span style="font-size:14pt;font-family:"khmer ui", sans-serif;color:black;">News

1st—4th Grade GT Screening

Information regarding GT screening was sent home with 1st—4th grade students Thursday, November 1st , notifying parents of the opportunity to refer their child for screening. A year later, Coleman was promoted as an instructional officer. Her role soon expanded to include the provision of speech therapy services for secondary students at the Opportunity Awareness Center and the Behavior Transition Program. She also coordinated district-wide speech therapy, adapted physical education and related services for occupational therapy, physical therapy, music and art therapy.

She worked tirelessly on establishing eligibility guidelines for the district, overseeing assessment teams and establishing service program guidelines, all while maintaining federal, state and local guidelines. While in this role, her responsibilities continued to grow in size. Coleman became responsible for the supervision and administrative responsibilities for roughly 120 direct hires and contract speech-language pathologists. She also took on the instructional services for the visually impaired population throughout the district.

Coleman's passion continues today for children with special needs as she advocates on their behalf to help them achieve their goals. Coleman retired in 2016 with 31 years of dedication and service to students and parents.
