This is the first of eleven Legacy Parent Academy sessions planned for the 2018-2019 school year. The schedule for the year is attached.

Please visit the Legacy Parent Academy webpage to review session descriptions and register for the first session!

Please visit the Legacy Parent Academy webpage, which includes session descriptions and a link to register for the first session, for more details!

Katy ISD's Focus on Safety

A safe learning environment for all Katy ISD students and staff is our top priority. Throughout this school year, you will see an increased focus on building awareness and enhancing systems that support both the physical and emotional well-being of all our children. This includes our video series on bullying prevention and intervention. Check out our latest video, "What Does Bullying Look Like?." More information about policies and procedures related to bullying can be found here.

Arrival Safety

The safety of all students is a priority at WoodCreek Elementary. Unfortunately it is often observed that students are arriving in the staff parking lot or crossing Wooded Hollow beyond the crosswalk in the mornings. Please know that these areas are not part of the arrival plan because they are dangerous and put students' safety at risk. Parking cars on Wooded Hollow also blocks the kindergarten loop used by daycare and students with special needs which causes delays for those participating in arrival appropriately. Help us ensure the safety of all students by using the car drop off line at the front of the school unless you are parking in the staff parking lot to attend a scheduled meeting.

Read Deed Run

Read, Deed, and Run is an exciting, all encompassing program for the WHOLE child. Students in grades 4 & 5 who commit RDR will complete to a 25 week program in which they will read 26 books (or 2600 pages), perform 26 good deeds in the community, and run a total of 26.2 miles. Every other week the club will meet to discuss books, deeds, stretching, nutrition, and run 1 mile under the supervision of WCE teachers and administrators. The program will culminate in May when the students run their final 1.2 miles in a "race" to earn their Finisher's t-shirt and medal. It is called Legacy Parent Academy. In it, parents will hear from experts on topics that impact students and schools district-wide such as financial aid for college, mental health resources and bullying.

"Legacy Parent Academy is a new initiative designed as part of the District's Strategic Plan Goal 8, which focuses on supporting the emotional well-being of all learners," said Director of Counseling Services Christy Maeker. "This is a great opportunity to provide parents with information and strategies to assist their children," added Maeker.

Legacy Parent Academy sessions are supplemental to campus-based programs and initiatives. The topics of each session were selected based on the need expressed by parents and in response to concerns the District sees on campuses and the community. Katy ISD looks forward to working with local media partners to promote and cover these sessions, which can be found on the district's Legacy Parent Academy website. The first session "Emotional Well-being and Referral Processes" is on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Legacy Stadium from 6 – 8 p.m., with capacity for 325 attendees. This is the first of 11 Legacy Parent Academy sessions planned for the 2018-19 school year. Five of the academy sessions focus on social-emotional learning topics while six of them focus on academic topics.

Merrell Center. Each campus selected a decade to represent and based on it, they chose their apparel. Thus, thousands of Katy ISD teachers, administrators and staff, hugged and shook hands as they participated in this annual event marking the official start of the 2018-2019 academic year and most importantly, the kickoff of the District's 100 year anniversary.

"The stories of our past add to the legacy we are all a part of today. It helps us define who we are. It's part of our family tree." said Katy ISD Superintendent Lance Hindt.

The celebration's theme was "A Century of Legacy." Superintendent Hindt and Board of Trustees President Courtney Doyle praised everyone's efforts in making Katy ISD, one of the best school districts.

"Thanks to you," said Doyle, "Our students are some of the top performing kiddos in the state and country, our community is thriving, and as a result, Katy is one of the fastest-growing school districts in the nation."

Participants were reminded of the struggles brought on by Harvey, the passage of the 2017 bond that will provide campus renovations and new schools, and goals and strategies that will be employed in classrooms and campuses across the district to encourage personalized learning and strengthen student support systems.

With the presentation of commemorative rings, educators Leslyn Jacks of Katy Elementary and Amanda Sandlin of Tompkins High School were recognized as the two District's Teachers of the Year. For several educators, this event was a reminder of Katy's rich history and a source of encouragement.

"There is a tremendous amount of history and culture in Katy. I have worked for the District for 13 years and there are things I did not know. It is very inspirational," said Elise Allen, Assistant Principal at Griffin Elementary.

Convocation also highlighted the legacy of Mr. Roosevelt Alexander, one of Katy ISD's namesakes and the Beckendorff family. Enjoy photos of this year's convocation!

households to complete an online application which will be available two weeks before the start of the new school year. Katy ISD Nutrition and Food This is a service the Tays JH PTSA has set up for the convenience of our parents and students to help facilitate the correct supplies needed for the 2018-19 school year. This is not a money earning service for the PTSA, as such we are requiring that those using this service become PTSA members. Your membership will go to help support the programs and services that the PTSA provides our school. Some of the things provided are the Cyber Talk that we do for the 6th graders at the beginning of the year, the HMNS program for the 7th graders, speaker Keith Davis for the 8th graders in January. We also help to provide technology and support to our teachers, staff and students at Tays. With the purchase of a PTSA membership and school supplies you will become a part of supporting our school. .

If you have any further questions please contact me at president@taysjhptsa.org

Thank you,

Jennifer Lowry

Tays Junior High PTSA President

Hey Parents,

We are so excited to announce a new partnership with 1st Day School Supplies! We have collaborated with 1st Day School Supplies to help parents and teachers get the exact supplies needed for next school year without the hassle and aggravation of shopping at Wal‐Mart, Target or Staples.
