Katy ISD Honored Fallen Soldiers with Activities District-wideKaty ISD Honored Fallen Soldiers with Activities District-wide2014-05-27T20:50:12Z<div class="ExternalClass4AB495C127A14C14ABC050C6BCA1E9C6"><p>​On Monday, all throughout Katy ISD, campuses hosted a variety of activities to celebrate Memorial Day and honor fallen soldiers in partnership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9182 and parents and staff who currently or formerly served in the military.<br> <br>The celebrations began shortly before 8 a.m. at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.756268664393225.1073741839.113148448705253&type=3" target="_blank">Katy ISD Education Support Complex </a>with a 21 gun salute by the Katy ISD Police Department and the national anthem sung by WoodCreek Jr. High Choir Director Christin Abbott. <br> <br>Later in the morning, students and staff from Mayde Creek elementary, junior high and high school were joined by local veterans, community members and Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey as they paid tribute to fallen soldiers during a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.756262504393841.1073741838.113148448705253&type=3" target="_blank">special ceremony </a>featuring the Mayde Creek junior high band, members of the Student Council and National Junior Honor Society, and the Mayde Creek high school ROTC students. <br> <br>Additionally, local veterans led the pledge of allegiance at many campuses and visited history and social studies classrooms throughout the day to share their experiences serving the country. Katy ISD to Operate on Summer Hours Beginning June 9Katy ISD to Operate on Summer Hours Beginning June 92014-05-19T21:10:44Z<div class="ExternalClass394EB2ACEB1F46ABA096E4532CE6F80D"><p>​<span style="line-height:1.5;">A</span><span style="line-height:1.5;">ll Katy ISD campuses and central offices will operate from</span><span style="line-height:1.5;"><strong> 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday</strong> beginning Monday, June 9 and ending on Thursday, August 7, 2014.</span><span style="line-height:1.5;"> Katy ISD will not provide office coverage on Fridays during summer hours.​</span></p><p>Regular work hours will be observed the week of June 30 – July 3, with Friday, July 4 being a holiday. The first day of school is Monday, August 25, 2014.</p></div>
Katy ISD Announces Outstanding First Year Teachers of the YearKaty ISD Announces Outstanding First Year Teachers of the Year2014-03-24T13:49:04Z<div class="ExternalClass6F799DA71ECB4C3189588B6E81187F5F"><p>​<span style="line-height:1.5;">Katy ISD recently surprised two teachers with the </span><strong style="line-height:1.5;">District-wide Outstanding First Year Teacher of the Year Award</strong><span style="line-height:1.5;">. Wilson Elementary teacher</span><strong style="line-height:1.5;"> Erin Wright</strong><span style="line-height:1.5;">, and Beckendorff Jr. High teacher </span><strong style="line-height:1.5;">Lindsey Palmer</strong><span style="line-height:1.5;">, were chosen for the elementary and secondary awards respectively.</span><span style="line-height:1.5;">  </span><span style="line-height:1.5;">Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey, along with each campus principal and family and friends surprised the teachers in their classrooms.</span><span style="line-height:1.5;">​</span></p><p>Erin Wright is a graduate of Texas Tech University and teaches second grade at Wilson Elementary. She creates an engaging learning environment for her students with her classroom management, instructional techniques and work ethic, as well as her positivity and passion for teaching. Wright also eagerly participates in professional development opportunities on campus and in the District.</p><p>"Erin serves as a role model professionally and personally for others," said Rhonda Henderson, principal at Wilson Elementary. "She has the rare intuitive sense that recognizes that in order for students to learn, they must have their needs met at every level. She exhibits the distinguishing characteristics that we would want all Katy ISD teachers to embody." </p><p>Lindsey Palmer is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University and teaches seventh-grade math at Beckendorff Jr. High. Palmer is attentive to students' academic and behavioral needs by constantly seeking activities to help in these areas of her instruction. She also developed a successful Parent Math Night at Beckendorff Jr. High in which parents were invited to her classroom to learn methods used for teaching upcoming math topics.</p><p>"You would never know that Lindsey has only been in the classroom for a total of six months because her actions are those of a veteran teacher," said Mindy Dickerson, principal at Beckendorff Jr. High. "She has developed a warm, caring relationship with her students as evidenced by her interactions with them, both in and out of the classroom." </p><p>Along with the District-wide Outstanding First Year Teachers of the Year, Katy ISD celebrates all of the 2014 campus-level nominees:</p><p>Elementary: <strong>Erin Gorman</strong>, Creech Elementary; <strong>Debbie Langan</strong>, Exley Elementary; <strong>Elizabeth Haisler</strong>, Fielder Elementary; <strong>Katherine Shaw</strong>, Holland Elementary; <strong>Abigail Nation</strong>, Mayde Creek Elementary; <strong>Ashley Barroso</strong>, Morton Ranch Elementary; <strong>Brooke Strake</strong>, Rylander Elementary; <strong>Erin Wright</strong>, Wilson Elementary; <strong>Stephanie Sell</strong>, Winborn Elementary; <strong>Stephanie Fine</strong>, Wolman Elementary; and <strong>Jennifer Titus</strong>, WoodCreek Elementary. </p><p>Junior High: <strong>Lindsey Palmer</strong>, Beckendorff Jr. High; <strong>Leslie Garrido</strong>, Cinco Ranch Jr. High; <strong>Ashley Shirani</strong>, Mayde Creek Jr. High; <strong>Todd Dutch</strong>, McDonald Jr. High; <strong>Bonnie VanValkenburgh</strong>, McMeans Jr. High; <strong>Lionel Willis</strong>, Memorial Parkway Jr. High; and <strong>Holly Datwyler</strong>, Seven Lakes Jr. High. </p><p>High School: <strong>Kevin Gorman</strong>, Cinco Ranch High; <strong>Autumn Eddy </strong>and <strong>Mallory McGinnis</strong>, Mayde Creek High; <strong>Sarah Gonzalez</strong>, Morton Ranch High; <strong>Kevin Robinson</strong>, Seven Lakes High; and <strong>Amber Warren</strong>, Tompkins High. </p><p>Both Wright and Palmer will be honored, along with Campus Teachers of the Year, and the First Year Teacher nominees at a special event in April.</p></div>
