Katy ISD Police Safety Bureau Begins Fourth Class of Award Winning Academy Katy ISD Police Safety Bureau Begins Fourth Class of Award Winning Academy 2016-09-23T15:35:42Z<div class="ExternalClass59DFB01F558F4BCC8B309C5DEAA8F52D"><p>​The Katy ISD Police Safety Bureau is about to begin its fourth Katy ISD Board and Texas School Safety Center recognized <strong><em>Safe Schools Parent's Academy</em></strong><em>. </em>Modeled after citizen's police and fire academies, this monthly program is designed for those already actively engaged with Katy ISD as volunteers, partners, or supporters of the District.</p><p>Attendees will get an inside look at various areas designed to keep students safe and secure. Topics are designed to showcase how Katy ISD approaches school safety. Presentations may include police operations, emergency management, the campus safety task force, the internet crimes against children task force, the gang task force, the weather service, and others. Tours of the police communications center, specialty equipment and emergency vehicles, along with demonstrations of canine search techniques, police bicycle procedures, and police communications are also anticipated.</p><p>The Safe Schools Parent Academy is by invitation only. New Instructional Materials Selection CommitteeNew Instructional Materials Selection Committee2016-09-15T20:23:54Z<div class="ExternalClassC7F9B540F65948899C2AEA64CAD879B5"><p>​Katy ISD is looking for parent volunteers to serve on committees to review and select new instructional materials for Career and Technical Education, Languages Other Than English, Algebraic Reasoning, Statistics, several new courses and other courses needing updated materials. These materials will be implemented during the 2017- 2018 school year. If you would like to be a part of one of the review committees, complete the interest form at <a href=""><span style="text-decoration:underline;"></span></a> to be considered for participation on the selection committee. Keep in mind that not all volunteers may be selected to serve on a committee.</p></div>
GT Screening for Current 5th Grade StudentsGT Screening for Current 5th Grade Students2016-09-12T14:07:58Z<div class="ExternalClass5D50E2908C814DC590F1331198B08DF4"><p>​Students in fifth grade who are not currently identified for the elementary Challenge program have the opportunity to be screened for Gifted and Talented Program service to begin in the fall of sixth grade. Secondary gifted program options are available in English, reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students may be screened in any or all of these content areas.</p><p>If you would like to refer your child for secondary Gifted and Talented screening, complete a Secondary Parent Checklist and return to your child's elementary campus by September 29, 2016. <strong>Secondary Parent Checklists will not be accepted after September 29th.</strong></p><p>You may obtain a Secondary Parent Checklist from your child's campus counselor beginning September 12, 2016.  You may also access the <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Secondary</strong></span> Parent checklist on the Katy ISD website <a href="/dept/GT/Pages/default.aspx">here​</a>.  </p><p>If you refer your child for screening, testing will take place at your child's campus in October and November.  You will be notified of the placement decision by U.S. mail in January.</p><p>Contact the Challenge teacher at your child's elementary school with any questions.  </p></div>
Referral Deadline for Kindergarten Gifted and Talented ScreeningReferral Deadline for Kindergarten Gifted and Talented Screening2016-09-13T16:44:58Z<div class="ExternalClassA053AE8211DA4ABEA656796D2873E910"><p style="text-align:justify;">Parents of kindergarten students in Katy Independent School District may refer their children for Challenge (Gifted & Talented) screening between September 19 and October 10.  All kindergarten parents will receive information in their child's take-home packet on how to refer him or her beginning the week of September 19.  Referral information is also available on the Katy ISD website: <a href="/"></a>.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The deadline for submission of the referral form (parent checklist) is October 11th. The deadline will be enforced so that students can be tested on the testing days designated for this purpose.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The State of Texas defines a gifted and talented student as a child or youth who performs or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Kindergarten service will begin by March 1, 2017.  The kindergarten program emphasizes the development of critical and creative thinking skills. Students attend for 60 minutes each week in the Challenge classroom. Students identified in kindergarten move into the elementary pullout program in first grade. If you have questions, please contact the counselor at the home campus or the campus Challenge teacher. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Parents of students who are referred and screened will receive placement notification during the last week of February.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Three informational session options for parents will be held on October 4th and 5th.   The first session on October 4th will be held at 7:00PM at Stephens Elementary School, 2715 Fry Road, in the cafeteria.  An interpreter will be available at this session for Spanish-speaking parents.  Two additional sessions will be held on October 5th at 5:00PM and 7:00PM at Cinco Ranch High School, 23440 Cinco Ranch Blvd, in the Commons. Students do not need to attend these sessions.  All session will last about one hour.</p></div>
