Legacy Parent Academy: Mental Health Services in Texas2018-10-15T14:44:05Z<div class="ExternalClassAB510558886E404497D6FAD218B0F7FB"><p style="text-align:justify;"><img src="/PublishingImages/Lists/latestnews/AllItems/LegacyParentAcademy_on_blue.jpg" alt="LegacyParentAcademy_on_blue.jpg" style="margin:5px;width:422px;" />Registration is now open for the next Katy ISD Legacy Parent Academy event set for <span style="text-decoration-line:underline;"><strong>Wednesday, October 24 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Legacy Stadium in Rooms ABC.</strong></span>  The session will focus on Mental Health Services in Texas. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">The workshop will help identify mental health services and support available to Texas students, adults and families.  Participants will gain knowledge regarding the process for obtaining these services, possible barriers when requesting them as well as understanding the role both schools and parents have in getting access to various services. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">This session will be presented in collaboration with the Katy ISD Police Department.  Katy ISD Legacy Parent Academy educational sessions are free and specifically designed to equip parents with the strategies and techniques to support their children.  Sessions taking place throughout the school year will include experts on a variety of topics which can be viewed on our <a href="/parents/Pages/Legacy-Parent-Academy.aspx">Legacy Parent Academy website</a>.  </p><p>We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!</p><p><br></p></div>
Katy ISD Participates in National Prescription Drug Take Back Eventhttp://www.katyisd.org/Lists/latestnews/DispForm.aspx?ID=955Katy ISD Participates in National Prescription Drug Take Back Event2018-10-05T20:35:48Z<div class="ExternalClass73E2AE27FF3541F58B10767ED0BD9B25"><p><span style="text-align:justify;">The Katy ISD Police Department in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to safely dispose of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications.  According to the DEA, pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor's supervision.  Needles or sharp objects will not be accepted and any liquids must be in prescribed containers.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.</span><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">"Many families could be harboring dangerous prescription drugs in their own medicine cabinet without even knowing it," said Katy ISD Police Chief Robert Jinks.  "Not disposing of these medications creates an easy access for students to obtain and abuse this types of prescriptions.  Through the drug take back program residents have a better and safe option to dispose of these items," added Jinks.  </p><p>Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Last April, Americans turned in 309 tons (over 617,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 5,500 sites operated by the DEA.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>What:</strong><strong>           <br></strong><strong>National Prescription Drug Take Back Event</strong></p><p><strong>Where:</strong>         <br>Mark L. Katy ISD Collaborates with FBI in Think Before You Post Campaignhttp://www.katyisd.org/Lists/latestnews/DispForm.aspx?ID=949Katy ISD Collaborates with FBI in Think Before You Post Campaign2018-09-28T19:55:12Z<div class="ExternalClass30B08DA3ECDC4FD78281ACC6C8A067BE"><p>​<span style="text-align:justify;">Hoax threats are not a joke.  This type of action can lead to serious legal consequences, even if there was never an intent to carry out the threat.  Katy Independent School District has joined forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Houston Division and various other law enforcement agencies to launch a public awareness campaign entitled #ThinkBeforeYouPost. </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Members of the Houston Police Department, the Harris County Sheriff's Office, police chiefs from Houston, Katy, Fort Bend and Aldine Independent School Districts as well as Crime Stoppers of Houston and Clear Channel Outdoor seek to educate the public about the consequences of making hoax threats of violence to schools and other public places.  Every threat is taken seriously and this type of behavior is considered a crime which can lead to a sentence of up to five years in prison, if escalated to a federal crime.  If a federal charge is not warranted, state charges can be considered.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">"I would like to give a word of commendation to the federal authorities for putting together an effort including law enforcement agencies from area school districts. This year the District will celebrate a "Century of Legacy".</span><span style="text-align:justify;">  </span><span style="text-align:justify;">Enacted on February 25, 1919, the legislature of the State of Texas established and created Katy ISD out of part of Harris, Waller and Fort Bend Counties.</span><span style="text-align:justify;">  </span><span style="text-align:justify;">During our centennial celebration, Katy ISD invites everyone to view the historical accomplishments through our </span><a href="/sites/100Year/Pages/default.aspx" style="text-align:justify;">Katy ISD Century of Legacy website</a><span style="text-align:justify;">, which details landmark accomplishments, the stories of affluential leaders and images that have survived the test of time.</span><span style="text-align:justify;">   </span><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Throughout the school year, Katy ISD will celebrate a century of dedication and commitment to our students, staff and community with campus celebrations and learning opportunities for our students, the future legacies of Katy ISD.   It is also a perfect opportunity for the District to partner up with those who can contribute additional information on the past achievements of one of the fastest growing school districts in the nation.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Over the past several months, dozens of Katy ISD employees along with namesakes and community members shifted through yesteryears and identified key events and timelines, all of which can now be found in a centralized location.  The goal is to make known a legacy filled with growth, tradition, culture and meaning.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Katy ISD looks forward to celebrating this centennial, as well as commence on its next century of providing educational excellence.  </p></div>

For that reason, the District is asking for your input as we continue to improve upon our parent and community engagement opportunities across our 64 campuses.</p><p>During the week of September 10, you will receive a survey via your personal email account.  It will only take about 10 minutes to complete and it requests your feedback regarding engagement opportunities on your child(ren's) campus that are working well, those that could be improved, as well as your thoughts on future school planning and support initiatives. In it, parents will hear from experts on topics that impact students and schools district-wide such as financial aid for college, mental health resources and bullying. </p><p>"Legacy Parent Academy is a new initiative designed as part of the District's Strategic Plan Goal 8, which focuses on supporting the emotional well-being of all learners," said Director of Counseling Services Christy Maeker.  "This is a great opportunity to provide parents with information and strategies to assist their children," added Maeker.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Legacy Parent Academy sessions are supplemental to campus-based programs and initiatives. This school year, Katy ISD announces additional campus safety and security measures which include:</span></p><p></p><ul><li><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Parent and Visitor Identification (ID) Requirement:</span><br>All parents and visitors must now present a valid, current, government-issued picture ID outside of the main entrance at all Katy ISD campuses prior to gaining admittance.  Each campus is equipped with a controlled access system that includes a camera and an intercom that parents and visitors will need to utilize when presenting their ID for entrance.  To gain further access beyond the campus front lobby, individuals will again be required to present their ID to the front desk receptionist in order to be officially logged into the visitor tracking system.</li></ul><p></p><ul><li><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Student Identification (ID) Badge Requirement:</span><br>Secondary students must now wear their ID badges at all times during school hours, while on district property.  Students in grades PK-5 will continue to use their badges during lunch and library times.  Fourth and fifth-grade students are requested to wear their badges throughout the school day.  At the secondary level, failure to follow the ID badge requirement may be considered a violation of the <em>Student Code of Conduct</em>.<br> </li><li><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Campus Door Unlock Times</span>:<br>Controlled access systems on campuses will now unlock main entrance doors at a set time each morning. Merrell Center. Each campus selected a decade to represent and based on it, they chose their apparel. Thus, thousands of Katy ISD teachers, administrators and staff, hugged and shook hands as they participated in this annual event marking the official start of the 2018-2019 academic year and most importantly, the kickoff of the District's 100 year anniversary.</span><span style="text-align:justify;"> </span><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">"The stories of our past add to the legacy we are all a part of today. It helps us define who we are. It's part of our family tree." said Katy ISD Superintendent Lance Hindt. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">The celebration's theme was "A Century of Legacy." Superintendent Hindt and Board of Trustees President Courtney Doyle praised everyone's efforts in making Katy ISD, one of the best school districts. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">"Thanks to you," said Doyle, "Our students are some of the top performing kiddos in the state and country, our community is thriving, and as a result, Katy is one of the fastest-growing school districts in the nation."</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Participants were reminded of the struggles brought on by Harvey, the passage of the 2017 bond that will provide campus renovations and new schools, and goals and strategies that will be employed in classrooms and campuses across the district to encourage personalized learning and strengthen student support systems. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">With the presentation of commemorative rings, educators Leslyn Jacks of Katy Elementary and Amanda Sandlin of Tompkins High School were recognized as the two District's Teachers of the Year. For several educators, this event was a reminder of Katy's rich history and a source of encouragement.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">"There is a tremendous amount of history and culture in Katy. I have worked for the District for 13 years and there are things I did not know. style="text-align:justify;">  </span><span style="text-align:justify;">Parents can begin their new application process for the 2018-19 school year beginning the first week of August 2018.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Children living in households whose income is at or below the federally approved levels based on household size may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals.  Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status from that same school year.  Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside.  Children with status as homeless, runaway, migrant or displaced by a declared disaster also qualify for meals.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an <a href="http://www.katyisdfoodservices.com/">online application</a> which will be available two weeks before the start of the new school year.  Katy ISD Nutrition and Food Service Department is working with local agencies to identify all children who are program eligible.  If a student receives a letter of approval on the first days of school, there is no need to complete a new application for the 2018-19 school year.  If a child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they are eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed.  A new application per household is required each school year.  For families that do not receive a letter and believe they should have or for those missing students in the letter received, they can contact the Nutrition and Food Service Department at 281-396-6240.  Staff is also available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Katy ISD Police Officers Honored for Demonstrating Bravery Behind the Badgehttp://www.katyisd.org/Lists/latestnews/DispForm.aspx?ID=917Katy ISD Police Officers Honored for Demonstrating Bravery Behind the Badge2018-06-01T19:37:47Z<div class="ExternalClass1CAFE9553AC94A3A93818D7B2E8A2052"><p><span style="text-align:justify;">This summer two Katy Independent School District students will enjoy their school break thanks to the quick thinking of three Katy ISD Police Officers.</span><span style="text-align:justify;">  </span><span style="text-align:justify;">Officer Christopher Pickering, Officer Michael Seiss and Officer Jose Gonzalez used their law enforcement and crisis management skills to save the lives of two students contemplating suicide.</span><span style="text-align:justify;">  </span><span style="text-align:justify;">Chief of Police Robert E. Jinks, along with his staff, honored them with the </span><em style="text-align:justify;">Chief's Meritorious Citation Award.</em><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;">On January 8, 2018, Officer Pickering was dispatched to a residence in reference to a possible suicidal student.  Officer Pickering's crisis intervention skills and his ability to develop a rapport with the student led to a voluntary mental health evaluation which saved the student's life.  After receiving treatment, the student informed the police department that Officer Pickering's dedication to his duty and his show of concern prevented him from taking his life that evening.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">On March 7, 2018, Officer Seiss and Officer Gonzalez were dispatched to Cinco Ranch High School in reference to a possible suicide.  Upon arriving both officers quickly assessed the severity of the incident and immediately began life-saving measures, that included creating a make-shift tourniquet with a leather belt, in order to halt the loss of blood from the victim.
