Taylor Made Tutoring faqs:

What is Taylor Made Tutoring?
“The Taylor Made Tutoring Program” provides volunteer tutors in most subjects on Tuesdays from 7-9 pm.

Who can come to Taylor Tutoring?
Taylor Made Tutoring is available to all current THS students, grades 9-12.  8th grade students taking advanced math courses for high school credit and students from other campuses may come on a space available basis.

Who are the volunteers?
Community members, business people, and parents have volunteered their services.  All volunteers have an educational background in the field in which they are tutoring, with many holding advance degrees in these areas or having had teaching experience.

Do I have to sign up?  How do I do this?
In order to schedule you best, we ask that you try to pre-register using the “Sign up” link above.  Make sure to also print out and complete the student info form and send with your student the first time they participate.

I didn’t find out about this soon enough or I forgot to register – can I come without registering?
Absolutely!  We ask that you come at 6:30 to see if the session you need is being offered and if space is available.

What do I do if I am having problems registering?
Email Janet Thomason or call 713-254-0207.

What do I bring to my tutoring session?
You should bring all your class materials for the subject that you need tutoring in.  These are your best resources!  These might include:

  • classroom notes
  • textbook
  • a laptop or tablet if you have one and use it to access the teacher web or online textbook
  • examples from class
  • current assignments or review sheets
  • paper and pencils/pens, calculator (if needed)
Our "Courtesy, Respect and Organization" Policy

We expect all participants to understand that tutors are giving of their time to benefit our students.  In exchange, we expect all students to follow the codes of conduct as required by KISD, and to show respect for their tutors' time.  Cancelations should be made NO LATER THAN 3 pm on the date of tutoring.  Failure to cancel twice in a semester will affect a student's ability to register for tutoring in advance and for the balance of the semester they will only be able to attend on a walk-in/space available basis. Students should also try to register for sessions as early as possible to facilitate scheduling.  The use of cell phones is not permitted during the sessions for any purpose other than educationally necessary.

SIGN UP DEADLINES! Students must sign up by Sunday night for tutoring on Tuesday. Occasionally the sign up genius site will stay open, but  Monday evening  it will lock down and students will be unable to register. You can email Janet Thomason by Tuesday noon to see if space is still available for you or to be put on the wait list, but tutors are only available on a first come first serve basis. If you do not receive a reply, a spot is not available for you. If a student reserves a spot and twice fails to cancel prior to 3 pm on Tuesday, they will no longer be able to pre-register in this program for the balance of the semester and ability to register on site will be at the discretion of the program administrator.

Taylor Made Tutors

Taylor High School is proud to offer a unique tutoring program within our school district.  In May 2013 we launched an exciting new program for parent and community involvement.  The Taylor Made Tutors program utilizes the talents of our local community to assist our students in their academic success.  Parents and community members are invited to participate in the program by providing tutoring to our students during weekly tutoring events.  Our track record is strong - we have many success stories from students who participate every week, as well as students who come in just when they need a little extra support.

Purpose of this program – this program is designed to optimize student success and to assist the teaching staff with tutorial time.  As state funding changes, our teachers face larger class loads, and are spread thin. The availability of an evening tutorial time will not only give students additional opportunity for personalized tutoring time, but will also help the teachers and show that our community is supportive of our high school and committed to the success of our students.

Volunteer needs – we need volunteers in all academic areas.  Tutors will be made available for all student levels, Academic, Pre-AP, AP and G/T.

  • Math – Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, Statistics
  • Sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science
  • History – World Geography, World History, US History, Government, Economics
  • English – All levels
  • Languages other than English – Spanish, German, French, Latin, Japanese and Chinese at all levels.  Native speakers are encouraged to join the tutoring team to provide a conversational opportunity for students.
  • Other areas – as the program strengthens, we hope to offer opportunities for students to work with community professionals on areas such as resume building, interview skills and more.

How will this work?

Training – a brief, one time orientation will be required of all Taylor Made Tutors, in addition to a security screening.

Commitment - Tutors DO NOT need to commit to every weekly session, your participation even once a month will be very helpful.  We currently tutor on Tuesdays from 7-9 pm and tutors can choose to tutor during one or both hours.

Confirmation – we always try to notify our tutors of approximately how many students have been registered to work with them.  This may be up to 6 students working at a table with the tutor.

On tutoring nights we will set up each tutor at a table or in a classroom, marked with their tutoring topic.  You may have up to six students in one session, but you will still be able to address individual needs since all students may not be working on exactly the same items. We strongly encourage our tutors to review teacher websites for current material, and we will forward links to materials that may be available for you.

How do I sign up?

Similarly to the way our students register, we have a separate Sign up Genius link for our tutors.  Initially, you will go to the link at the top of this page and click on "Register" to be a tutor, and once you have registered,  you will go to the VOLUNTEER Sign up Genius link (sign up for tutor dates above) to pick the dates and subjects that you can tutor.  The program coordinator will assist you in this process, and will contact you upon receipt of your initial registration.

The administration and staff at THS are excited about this opportunity for oustudents.  We hope that you will share in the excitement and look forward to having you as part of the Taylor Made Tutoring team!!!
