April Carrasquero, Kine Elementary Counselor

Hi, I am excited to serve the students, teachers, parents, and community of King.  Below is a synopsis of my role in the school and how my job can help and support the academic side of your child's needs. 

My role as a Campus Counselor:

  • Teach monthly guidance lessons during classroom visits following the Core Essentials

  • Implement socials skills and character building among peers

  • Talk with students when they are feeling emotionally

  • Talk with students about themselves and others

  • Talk with student's parents

  • Meet with groups

  • Welcome students to visit in my office as needed

  • Have lunch bunches with students

  • Help students set academic goals

  • Have resources parents can borrow upon request

A Counselor helps with:  

  • Peer relations

  • Goal setting

  • Standardized state testing

  • Transitions

How should my child request to see the Campus Counselor?

  • A student can ask their teacher to visit with the counselor

  • A teacher can request for a student to visit the counselor

  • A parent can request through phone call or e-mail

Things to do in the Counselor's Office: 

  • Students can talk about things that are important to them

  • They can play interactive games that help them learn about themselves and others

  • They can be in a discussion group

  • Students can read books about different concerns

My qualifications:

  • Master's degrees from Sam Houston State University with state certifications in school counseling

  • Classroom teaching experience

  • Active member of Texas Counseling Association

How do I grow as a professional?

  • Professional Development training, workshops and meetings provided by Katy ISD

  • Continued education through Texas Counseling Association

  • Professional research journals
