In a school setting, a counselor does brief counseling which addresses minor problems within a few sessions. The school setting is different than a therapeutic/clinical setting where diagnosis and treatment plans are created and treatment is administered for a longer period of time.
The goal of school counseling is to address minor issues which impact learning while at school. If issues continue to impact the student's learning at school, after intervention by the school counselor, a referral to an outside resource will be suggested to the parent/guardian.
School Counselors also work with outside agencies to ensure student success while at school.
Small group counseling is designed to be preventive and developmental. Being part of the group is an excellent way for students to learn new skills, develop self-confidence, develop awareness about how others see them, practice new behaviors, and better understand how to deal with the many problems life presents.
I will be working with the children in a classroom setting for guidance lessons throughout the school year. Lessons are meant to meet the needs of every child from Kindergarten to 5th grade. With the ever changing demands and influences in the lives of our children, learning can be impacted considerably therefore interventions are an integral part of the learning process. School Counseling at Nottingham Country Elementary is based upon giving students the tools to be successful in school. And the goal is for those skills to be carried over into lifelong learning in all avenues including academics, personal, and social interaction.

Parenting with Love and Logic
This is a parenting program designed to provide simple, easy to use techniques to help parents have more fun and less stress while raising responsible kids of all ages. Katy ISD provides opportunities for parents to receive training for program.
Core Essentials Character Education Program
Katy ISD's character education program is Core Essentials, a Chick-Fil-A sponsored program. The program highlights a character trait each month, along with an animal that possesses features of that trait. In addition, to kick off the month, we wear a color designated by the district. The class in each grade with the most children participating is the recipient of the Shining Knight Award for that month and the school wide class winner receives Chick-Fil-A Valuable cards. Children who are seen demonstrating the featured trait are recognized by class mates through Good Guys/Good Girls notes and three winners are chosen randomly at the end of each cycle.
