Katy ISD Named the College Board's AP District of the Yearhttp://www.katyisd.org/Lists/latestnews/DispForm.aspx?ID=1038Katy ISD Named the College Board's AP District of the Year2019-04-25T20:53:09Z

Katy Independent School District is now known as the number one school district in the nation when it comes to expanding access to, and increasing performance in, Advanced Placement (AP) courses! Today, Katy ISD was named the College Board Advanced Placement® Large District of the Year. Elected officials, students, teachers, district administration, and the College Board leadership, were all on hand to celebrate this outstanding achievement at a student assembly held at Morton Ranch High School this morning.

"During the year in which we are celebrating our 100-year anniversary, I'm proud to say that what we have achieved here today is evidence of a century of learning that is built upon in every classroom, every day," said Superintendent Ken Gregorski. "Day in and day out, our teachers and staff are helping inquisitive minds expand their knowledge and skills in preparation for post-secondary education, careers and beyond," added Gregorski.

"Katy ISD leads the nation in expanding access to AP while helping more AP students earn scores that translate into college savings," said Trevor Packer, College Board's Senior Vice President for AP & Instruction. "Administrators and teachers throughout Katy's schools - not just the many superb AP teachers - are doing tremendous work to prepare a wide range of students for AP classes," added Packer.

In order to receive this recognition, the College Board requires a district of Katy ISD's size to increase student participation in AP courses by four percent over a three-year period. From 2017 to 2018 alone, the number of Katy ISD students participating in AP courses increased by 25 percent, and the number of exams administered increased by 20 percent. As far as performance, 77.4 percent of AP exams taken by Katy ISD students scored a three or better.

Participating in AP course work can lead to college savings for many families. The typical student who scores a three or higher on two AP exams has the potential to save, on average, $1,779 at a public four-year college and over $6,000 at a private institution.

In addition to today's event, Katy ISD will be honored in Orlando, FL during the 2019 AP Annual Conference in July 2019.

Broll of the College Board AP District of the Year Recognition

Photo Gallery of College Board AP District of the Year Recognition

Katy ISD Advanced Placement Student Highlight Video

For them, finding a good school home for their son was a top priority. "I did my research and everyone recommended Katy ISD as the best school district," said Peter Morcos, Christopher's father. "We decided to move into Katy and look for a house in this area so that we are able to go to a Katy ISD school," added Morcos.

It's been no secret that families are moving west of Houston into what was known as a small suburb. Communities zoned to the district have been flourishing at outstanding rates making Katy ISD one of the fastest growing school district, not just in Texas, but in the nation. The quality of education offered in Katy ISD classrooms has attracted families from all parts of the world to what is now being called a destination school district.

Photo gallery of 80,000th student celebration for newscasts and publications.

Katy ISD was the largest school district, with close to 80,000 students to receive this grade. Just recently Niche, an educational data analysis site, also announced their "Top 10 Public Elementary Schools in the Houston Area" and Katy ISD took all 10 spots, plus an additional six.

"Providing exceptional instruction and learning, as well as a safe and secure environment, is a process that involves great teachers, parents, school staff, administrators, mentors, volunteers, businesses, parent support groups, along with local and state governments," said Board of Trustees President Courtney Doyle.

Photo Gallery of State of the District Event

This is a campaign that creates awareness with young people and also with their parents," said Robert Jinks, Katy ISD Chief of Police.

According to authorities, posting false threats through social media platforms or any electronic means, not only requires countless hours of investigation by law enforcement agencies but it also drains school resources and ends up costing taxpayers' money. In some cases, schools shut down resulting in the loss of instructional time for students and teachers.

Misguided attempts at humor are no laughing matter and can end up ruining a student's future aspirations and career opportunities. Katy ISD seeks the public's assistance to curb hoax threats among our student population. Below you will find additional resources to share with family and friends. Remember hoax threats are not a joke, so think before you post!

Resources:

Think Before You Post PSA

FBI, This Week: Campaign Addresses Consequences of Hoax Threats

Esta Semana en el FBI: Por Medio de una Campaña se Abordan las Consecuencias de las Amenaza
