Students may check out books at any time of the instructional day. The books circulate for a two week period and, in most cases, may be renewed. Each student is given a district ID badge for which he is responsible during the school year. The badge must be presented at the circulation desk each time he checks out materials. Since our circulation is computerized, this procedure serves as a means of verifying that the materials are being checked out to the correct patron.
Our policy allows each student to check out books only. Reference materials are circulated only if they are needed for special reports or projects. The student is allowed to borrow one reference resource per evening. The book must be returned to the library by 8:20 a.m. the following day. Our complete reference collection must be available for classes to utilize during the school day. Reference materials are not circulated over holidays.
Overdue notices are sent to the homeroom teacher each week. Overdue fines are not charged; however, the student is required to pay for lost or damaged materials. The parent will be refunded if the lost book is returned in good condition.
If a student has lost a library book or damaged a book beyond repair, the student will be asked to pay the replacement value of the book. We are sometimes asked why parents can’t purchase a replacement from a bookstore where the prices are less expensive. The books bought for a KISD library are library bound quality and intended for numerous circulations. The vendors also charge a fee for the processing and cataloging of the books so that they are ready to put on the shelf upon arrival.
Only students with a clear library record are allowed to check out books.
The Shafer Library LOVES our volunteers! If you would like to volunteer in the library please see the PTA website to sign-up!
Birthday Book Club
Anyone can participate in the Shafer Birthday Book Club! Parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends can celebrate a special child by donating a book to our library in the child’s honor.
The students and staff of Shafer Elementary join the celebration as your child is honored on the morning announcements!
Summer birthdays are invited to participate during any time of the year. You also may choose to celebrate your child’s half- birthday!
