October 2016- Demographic update on enrollment and growth provided to the Board of Trustees.
November 2016- Preliminary ABM recommendation provided to the Board of Trustees at a Work Study meeting.
November 2016- Public comment on the preliminary recommendation. This will include a feedback survey.
December 2016- Final ABM recommendation provided to the Board of Trustees for discussion/action.

What is an Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM)?
Attendance Boundary Modifications (ABMs) help us to manage growth in Katy ISD. As the District grows, we have to adjust boundaries when new schools are opened. This helps us to balance the number of students at each school.
Why is an ABM necessary for 2017-18?
An ABM is necessary for SY 2017-2018 due to growing enrollment which will lead to the opening of a new elementary school, as well as, a junior high and high school in the northwest quadrant of the school district. At this time only three ABMs are being considered.
What existing schools will be potentially impacted by the ABM for Bryant Elementary, Stockdick Junior High and Paetow High School?
Katy Elementary, Wolman Elementary, Katy Junior High, McDonald Junior High, Katy High School and Morton Ranch High School.
December 12 – Board approves, during Regular Meeting, ABM maps presented to them on December 5

Last year (2015), Beckendorff Junior High was identified as being over capacity. Why are we not addressing an ABM for that junior high this year?
We learned through community survey feedback and discussions that parents prefer to leave the boundaries for that school as is for the time being. Furthermore, we do not anticipate enrollment for this campus to grow. Instead, we expect it to decline over time, as early as next year. Therefore, it is recommended to leave intact.
How will the District determine which school boundaries will be modified as part of the 2017-18 ABM?
The ABM recommendations will be crafted collaboratively with District Administration and Population and Survey Analysts (PASA) and include a robust feedback loop through parent and community surveys and direct dialogue.
When will an ABM recommendation be provided to the Board of Trustees?
Preliminary proposals will be taken to the Board in November 2016 and a final ABM recommendation will be presented to the Board for discussion and approval by December 2016.
When will parents and students be notified about changes to their school or feeder pattern for 2017 - 2018?
Katy ISD will notify impacted families by February 2017.
Will the District consider District-wide attendance boundary modifications?
As we near build out, we will consider District-wide attendance boundary modifications. However, right now specific attendance boundary modifications will occur with both the construction of each new school facility, as well as in targeted situations to optimize enrollment capacity and balance enrollment between schools.
Is this Attendance Boundary Modification simply a short-term solution to a long-term problem?
Attendance Boundary Modification is an integral part of the growth management process that the District utilizes. As the District continues to grow, Attendance Boundary Modifications will be necessary as new schools are opened and when the need arises to balance enrollment between existing schools.
How accurate are your demographic projections?
Katy ISD has been utilizing the demographic services of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA) for more than 10 years, and their projections are almost 99 percent accurate.
Are apartments factored into the demographic projections?
Yes, apartments are factored into the demographic projections. Currently, multi-family housing makes up approximately 20 percent of the housing units in Katy, with only 7.8 percent of Katy ISD students residing in an apartment.
Many of the newer campuses have portables, why is that?
We use portables as a growth planning tool. Portables are a
cost-efficient way to help us manage growth. We do not build new schools until
we have enough students to make it operationally viable.
