When someone joins the KEYS mentor program, we ask for a one-year commitment. What we really want, however, is for a mentor to commit until their student graduates from high school. And that’s exactly what Jim Burns did. When he and his KEYS student first met, Eduardo Reyes attended a junior high where Jim’s wife worked. She asked Jim to help Eduardo organize his folders, binders, locker and life! But after a few visits, Jim quickly realized that they had connected, so he became a mentor through the KEYS program and was in it for the long haul. (Read more)

Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union has committed to supporting Katy ISD students by becoming a 2012 KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor. “Employees at Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union have supported KEYS for more than ten years and know the direct benefit that students are getting from the program,” said Joe Simmons, president and CEO of BVSCU. “It felt natural for us to join forces to help support these students as they enter post-secondary schools.” Founded in 1954, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union serves educators, faculty, staff, their families and other qualified individuals within a 13-county area of Texas. Ties & Tiaras completes the KEYS triangle, celebrating mentors while supporting the scholarship fund. Held at a beautiful, private venue, it’s the one time each year when our family of mentors gathers together to share their experiences and rejoice in their accomplishments.

KEYS begins with an adult making a commitment to a child on the brink of success. Each week, mentors and their KEYS kids spend time together, on campus, forging a friendship. Ask any mentor and they’ll say: “I went into this thinking I was going to change a kid’s life. But, in reality, this kid has changed mine.”

In six years we have awarded $77,000 in KEYS Scholarships to graduating KEYS seniors. For many KEYS students, the thought of continuing their education beyond high school has never been a possibility. But because of generous community support it’s not just a possibility ~ it’s a reality.

Partners in Education offers many opportunities for parents, businesses and community members to build a relationship with Katy ISD. Just think of us as the department that brings the community into the classroom.
